Gotta jump in on the oil this pup is getting; that's a lot of fish oil to be giving w/no vitamin E. You MUST give vitamin E if you are giving fish oil!!!!

Thanks everyone, as for if it MUST be Petco, no, I can also access the TSC across the street from it. It's just hard sometimes to fit a semi in the parking lots, unless they're in a strip-mall or something.

Also, as for raw, I fed my GSDs I had raw, and they did well on it, however, I was also living in a house, not a semi, which is a bit harder to get smell's and stains out of, and it is also Werner's truck, as my husband is a company driver.

I do know that Petco has Merrek foods and Royal Canin, and I know that TSC carries Taste of the Wild, so both are within reach of me walking, if I had to.

My husband and I are currently staying in the southern part of OK, so it's still sort of warm (at least what I mean is no snow yet)

Thanks so much everyone, would also love further suggestions about this!

have you thought about a supplement such as Nupro or the missing link stuff?

I have a number of German Shepherds...and my wife has Yorkies...We use Taste of the Wild for all of them...and their skin is in good shape...I basically use the Pacific Stream Formula...but you must look at the ingredients and Protein content to see if this is what's good for your dog...
I think TOTW now has 2 formulas that are 25% Protein and 2 that are 32% Protein...I choose the Pacific Stream for a couple reasons...I like the Salmon in it and what it helps with...but I also like that it has a lower Protein level then some of the others...
Some people...I hear...up here in the cold weather...will actually switch their Formula choice from the 25% to the 32% according to the Summer (25%) and the Winter (32%)...I tried this and when I began using the 32% my dogs began putting too much weight on...and some folks would say "just give them less"...well your dog  needs so much food to fill their stomachs...
I feed my German Shepherds twice a day...one time they get TOTW kibble and the other they'll get RAW Chicken...(If you check around most of time you can find someplace that'll give you a deal on a bulk)...I personally buy 80 lbs of RAW Chicken a week...
By the way I buy all my Taste of the Wild dog food from Tractor Supply Co...if you buy a good amount most of the stores will work out a better price for you...Just ask!

 Hi DDRCZechFan,

I have a chow mix who has had flaky skin in the past. I started feeding her Wellness Senior about three years ago and have not had flaky skin since. You can get it at Petco for around $50.00/30lbs.
Have also seen people on the board talking about Orijen.

Good Luck,
C

DDRfan, you should really give Wellness a try. Petco is carrying it now. Wellness has a special puppy formula. It is very high quality food. I am feeding it now since 2 years and am very satisfied with it. They also offer allergy formulas. One of my GSDs is on the Rice/Salmon and this is truly the only one that did work for him. Taste of the wild/ natural balance/ vet diet... even with the same formula did not! No more itching, no more hotspots, no more vet visits.

My other GSDs and the little schnoodle are eating the Wellness Core, which is grain free. If you have questions they also have e-mail support at their website and will you send coupons in the e-mail. Give it a try, one 26lbs bag last me for one dog arround 3 weeks. You dont have to feed as much as with other formulas. For your Beagle you probably would last well over 4 weeks.

Wow thats alot of fish oil to give. If I gave that much to my adults, they would have the poos bad. Most of the time I feed raw but do use Core when I want to give something different. Bagged kibble does not even come close to raw in terms of coat and clean teeth. Ive tried alot of different foods and coat is usually the first thing to go. Teeth are second.

Flakey skin is caused by a lack of B vitamins. I would find a good food you and the dog like then if you need to, you can suppliment the diet with b vitamins. I personally dont like to separate the B's and feed only certain ones because i think it creates an imbalance. To my knowledge there isnt a bagged food that can really compensate for the b's because as soon as the food is cooked, the B's are destroyed. Some companies spray the b's on afterwards, but again Imo I think its a poor alternative.

Petco has come a long way in offering good food choices. Too bad Petsmart (which now carries Wellness, but not Core unfortunately) doesnt change their product line. . Another food not mentioned is Canidae. They have a grain free food that is pretty good. High in calories for dogs that have a problem maintaining weight.

The pic you posted is CUTE. You should submit it for a contest.

You are great to ask what to do...I am of the same mind the rest are...too much FISH OIL    CUT BACK the fish oit....give OMEGA 3 Caps which are usually vit E>>>>>>>  Remember this is a PUPPY....

His liver cannot take all that FISH OIL....it will eventually cause LIVER to act up as will to high a PROTEIN level..DO NOT USE THE 32 protein as your dog is not a working dog..he rides shotgun with you in a truck....does not need that high a protein level....I would FOllow what  Q man or Elkorr has suggested as Tractor Supply carries them and the one that is grain free is good....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzwellness core//////

Grab some Vit E capsules but do not five every day....every other day...too much Vit E in the body of a non working dog can be TOXIC>>>>>Feed raw chicken when you can on weekends or when you are not on the road ......You can put a couple of bags frozen chicken or liver BEEF or CALVES>>>>in the cooler in truck and thaw almost all the way , when you stop ......for rest ....

You are doing great and the shampoo Use is a non soap shampoo.....I think I posted it in your last thread for you....

That picture is adorable....   Enter it in a contest !!!!     send that in and make you a LARGER picture for framing  on that one......ADORABLE>>>

YR
Thought I would mention also...read all treat ingredients...DO NOT FEED any treats with RED DYE or NITRATES OR NITRITES IN THEM     ...

ALSO    Exceed from Sams has MENTADIONE in it....no thank you....and produced by PURINA which is owned by  NESTLES making the cheapest dog food they can manage to slip by AFDA requirements with....

Dick van Patten's Natural Balance.  Available at Petco, all natural ingredients, different flavors offered, buy 9 at Petco and get 1 free.  Really good consistent food and readily available.  Also have tubes of moist food in beef, lamb and chicken/turkey flavors that can be used for treats or normal diet.  I myself use it for tracking.  Good stuff, try it out.

I   SECOND PHILS  CHOICE  if you have to use Petco...Patten is a well balanced dog food...some others are not...but they will do if your Petco is not handling Patten...Some stores all over the usa handle or do not handle all the same.  I have no Petco here....Petsmart or a new kennel  BED  Bath and BONZ  that has NUTRA  pet FOOD..., called   CALIFORNIA NATURAL.
