The biggest reason why we don't have fall/winter litters!!!! Only spring puppies here. It makes me nauseous when I see those adds.

Good reminder!  I took a few calls last year from people wanting Christmas pups and I turned them all away for that reason.  Though it's not nearly as good as the call I got last weekend..  " I need a puppy right now.  My breeder backed out at the last minute and I'm leaving in a few hours to take the puppy to my parents, it's for them.  They wanted me to get a puppy for them because all the breeders by them have dogs with bad hips.  I'm running out of time!"  Sorry, even if I had pups available they would not be going with you.

KC, that's right about housebreaking a puppy in January!  Then they go to puppy pads and teach the dog to go inside and it can be rough, nobody wants to get up at 6am in 5 degree weather here in Chicago.

This is also a big time to educate people about pet shops and puppy mills, and not to buy from them.  People try to find breeders, but good breeders don't ALWAYS have litters available, so they go to the pet shop.... So there's an opportunity to educate each prospective puppy buyer who calls you, even if they don't meet your critera or if you have nothing available.  Ask for their email address to keep them updated, and send them this link http://members.tripod.com/antique_fcr/goodbreeder.html

Last year I remember thinking it amsusing when i saw ads posted for people who would pet-sit a new puppy or daycare a new puppy, until x-mas eve, so it can be a surprise for the kids.  When I was a kid, I asked for a German Shepherd every birthday, and every x-mas, for years.  I never got one.  My relatives showed Carins and that's all they would let me have because they don't shed, but all I wanted was a GSD, I remember telling my parents I would live in a shed in the backyard with the dog.  Now that I'm an adult I can have as many dogs as I want but I am still secretly jealous of the kids who get GSDs

"(Anyone else have to enter a topic before submitting?)"

This problem arises any time quotation marks are used in the topic header.

Other than that...a worthwhile reminder.  If I bred, I would avoid doing so if the litter would be ready for their permanent homes any time around the holidays.  Screening potential buyers is already problematic enough.

The people you sell a puppy too are the same people no matter what time of year it is... Like I could control the heat cycle of my dog...Please.

Great topic,  hopefully enough potential buyers see it.

However I feel that if they are on here trying to do some  research they are already a bit  ahead of the curve.

Moons... May I ask why you chose Hamy "Albert" Fish for your new avatar?

Our pup is going to be ready for us to bring home around Christmas.  That does not mean I am buying a Christmas pup.  The LAST thing I want is for my kids to think it was a "present from Santa" or a "Toy."  We are already talking about the big responsibility that a pup brings and how we will need protect and care for her as she gets bigger.

The Christmas / Easter puppy or kitten thing is big business though and big trouble.  It is always sad to hear about the influx of unwanted pets to the humane society if the months following these holidays. :(

People wanting black kittens near Halloween is a red flag too. None of the rescue groups I work with let black kittens go in October and neither puppies nor kittens near Christmas. Instead, they send people home with a photo in a card until after the holidays.

When I last sold an older male pup to a family who already had a litter sister, I offered to keep the pup until after Christmas so that the pup would not get lost in the holiday festivities. I then offered to deliver the pup to the home because the buyer was ill. Little did I know that this was a Jehovah's Witness family who did not celebrate Christmas and regarded it as a heathen holiday!
