I guess desperation makes people do things and take risks they normally wouldn't.  I've never felt the lure of the drug trade, but I imagine that's due to my upbringing and God's grace in my life.

For those that do feel that lure...Best of luck avoiding the GSD nose!

Max,
I rarely put up topics, I just respond when I think I can add something to the discussion.  I respect others opinions that is what a good thread is all about.

Stacy,
I am training two females to work together and
be partners. I started this about 2 years ago. They are just
now showing me what two girls can do when they put their
minds together. I would take  them.. up against anything out there.
A year ago I was just about to give up and than they really started
working as a team. Their fearless when they work together.
This morning their speed and accuracy where unbelievable. No
one to my knowledge has had the success I think I am having.
Duel Force Bitches.....tough as nails and fearless. They can take
pressure and work very similar as a pack would.

Crys, Just goes to show people are idiots. The K9s here are getting on up in years with no formal in service training days and the city has no intentions of replacing them. <Sigh> A crying shame. The best interdiction guys we have don't use K9s and is purportedly 2 of the best on the East Coast ( Rumors.. you know how that is)

I went to recerts about a week ago to watch some of the dogs we've put into service with PDs, along with a few that we routinely board. All of mine passed with flying colors. It is always evident when a handler lets his personal life interfere with working his K9 I must add.

Melissa,
You definitely do not need a dog to get dope.  I can get as much dope off traffic stops with out my dog.  It is fun to use the dog and the dog can and does establish Probable Cause when consent has or will be denied.  I'm not sure what the comment of the "handler's personal life" has to do with anything.  Any one can issues in their personal life, no one is perfect.

I was more or less commenting on the sorry state of our  city's affairs then anything else. I would love to see them add more K9s, but all the political BS gets in the way.  I feel sorry for our handlers who get no formal training. They are on their own if they want to train. Our K9 unit will soon be no more.

We go train with the county's K9s and have a blast.

Just watching re-certs and knowing the handlers, some handlers should not be because they let their personal life interfere with working their dogs. No one is perfect, that's for sure but if the handler can not keep their personal issues from being handler errors then they should not handle a dog.

I'm just making general conversation. It says open topic and I always like reading what you have to say, Jim.  I'm not disagreeing with you at all :)

I actually agree with you about the current state of most municipalities.  The economy is causing budget cuts everywhere and Police and Fire Dept's are definitely feeling it.  They haven't cut our unit, they threatened to but they have not replaced handlers that we need.  A K9 handler can not really train on his own, there is too much paperwork, documentation and certifications that need to be maintained.

I was just curious about the comment.  I certainly do understand.  Morale at most PD's across the country is very low, why do any job when the city doesn't appreciate what you do.   I enjoy my job and love what I do.  If I didn't it would be a really crappy job.  The pay stinks, the hours stink and if you don't like the work, what you have to deal with on the job stinks.   It is a really bad job if you take it for the money or because you need a job.

Jim,

Don't click on things that you would rather not read/discuss.  Is that so hard to understand?  How about we all just post a picture of our dog's morning steamer, and that will be the depth of our interaction.
