There was a thread recently about bloat studies and they do not recommend wetting kibble. Dry kibble mixed with canned was the least likely to cause bloat, if I remember correctly. Also, feeding raw does not guarantee a dog will not bloat. Here is the thread: www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/bulletins_read/423511.html

I hate to hijack my own thread , but I want feedback on my multiple foods regimen..????....Does anyone else feed multiple kinds a food at one time ???...The theory behind this is, one brand of food is not going to completely meet all needed dietary requirements. Therefore, feeding more than one food has a better chance at covering all the bases....Also, with recalls and such, it is nice to know that he is use to more than one brand....Variety is the spice of life... Right...????

Not a good theory for dogs, I'm afraid. And you shouldn't mix raw and kibble together because of differing digesting times. Just like your kids' diet, your dog's intake requirements will be met over a period of time, not at every single meal. I think you are way over-thinking this!

Ditto to Beetree.
Mudwick, Schmudwick. You got your answer. I remember when Mudwick was just a newbie, knee high to a grasshopper. Ok, not really that long ago but now that you mention it, where IS Mudwick? Maybe I can irritate Mudwick into appearing?

Ruger, in terms of variety, you're right, but it's not in ever MEAL- it's over time. I do switch kibbles periodically if I feed kibble, but all you're doing by mixing them together is averaging the nutrients and making another kibble...if you know what I mean. Better to feed one, then a month or two later, another one, if you're so inclined.

My dogs usually eat around 7.00am and 8.00pm, but sometimes later, it does vary according to my schedule, and occasionally they only eat once a day. 3 meals a day is only for puppies up to about 4 months old. I think its fine to mix different foods, although in theory the better foods should provide everything the dog needs but sometime they get bored with the same food all the time. For a while I fed raw and kibble, but not together in the same meal. I stopped feeding raw for other reasons. I feed the dry food with a little water, not soaked, and occasionally I add some homemade soup made of meat or chicken leftovers and vegetables. I have 2 dogs who love fruit with their food too (any fruit!), I agree that variety is good.... I think the best way of preventing bloat is to allow 1.5-2 hours after eating before any kind of serious exercise, but touch wood I have never had a case of bloat yet...

I posted at the same time as Jenni and Beetree, and I agree not to mix different kibbles in one meal but ring the changes occasionally.

oso...Thanks for the post,,,,
I do not want to start another dog food thread, but I have not heard much on this board about either of the foods I feed, Pinnacle or Natural Balance....both fish based...
