I think it can also be empathy related. The unconditional love we experience from our dogs is a valuable lesson for children.
I actually read an article in the paper about how animals help develop empathy in children. And empathy does need to be cultivated.

Don't know about it being genetic...No one in my family, kids or siblings, parents and grandparents, ever had more than a passing acquaintance with dogs. Me, on the other hand...I love dogs. Especially GSD. Not genetic in my family at all.
I do believe that children benefit from having a dog, for the reasons mentioned above.

It's genetic and can also be environmentally nurtured. Also, it works the other way as well.
