DOG FOOD

by Two Moons on 01 September 2010 - 04:09
I thought this was a resistant strain and it's in the chickens ovaries.
Even if it was only used for fertilizer the strain could be spred.
A farmer with any sense would burn them and bury them.
Dunno what they plan to do.

My understanding, although I could be wrong, is that the contamination has been linked to the hen's food.
According to a story from MSNBC, the contaiminated eggs will be introduced to the human food supply:
www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38851155/ns/health-food_safety/
Patricia El-Hinnawy, a spokeswoman for the federal Food and Drug Administration, confirmed Wednesday that Wright County Eggs and Hillandale Farms will send ongoing supplies of eggs from laying hens to so-called "breaking plants" to be processed and sold.I guess my two questions would be, if pasteurization will make the eggs so "indisputably" safe, why the second test?
FDA and animal science experts say the eggs will be pasteurized, a process that indisputably kills the salmonella bacteria responsible for infections that have sickened at least 1,300 people.
...
Still, he said that a special inspection process has been implemented for eggs from the farms in question. Employees from the two Iowa companies will test batches of the eggs after pasteurization and then report the results to USDA inspectors.
And why in the heck would you let the companies test their own eggs? That didn't work so well last time, now did it?

Your post that concluded with " That, would be living better" was in my opinion, excellent and could have been taken right from my own thoughts..
I was SO, SO, SOOO disgusted when I went grocery shopping last night that I didn't buy a QUARTER of what I wished to buy.
All the meats that seemed to have less fat and bone were two to three times more expensive than the nasty looking meat. (The kind you have to cut off so much fat and bone that there is hardly any meat left on it...)
-For example a 12 pack of chicken legs or thighs was about $4.00. That would have been about 3-4 meals for my family.
A small pack of boneless/skinless chicken breast was $8.00 and would have been one meal.
It was the same with the pork chops.
-The bone-in pack of about 6 chops in it, with tons of fat in it was about $6.00
A pack of 6 thick chops with hardly any fat to trim away was TWELVE BUCKS.
Like I said I was just so disgusted.
But gee, HOT DOGS are still 0.99 a pack! And nasty ole cans of Chef Boyardee (sp?) are as well! My kids hate that stuff anyway. Well, except the hot dogs, but we all know our kids can't live off of hot dogs.
Cans of veggies are no longer 2/$1.00 either, unless you get them on sale.
Produce is also through the ROOF!
My kids LOVE fruit (thankfully) and even though it's expensive for snacks that's what they get. I can't afford the organic fruits, but I still paid FIVE DOLLARS for a bag of regular grapes that they go through in two days. It was the same with the plums... Apples and bananas were not too bad.
A big box of Little Debbie snack cakes is like a buck... HMMMMM
A cool story, I ran into the convenience (-haha!) store with my three 1/2 year old son and I asked him if he wanted a lollipop for 25 cents. He said "No thank you, may I have that APPLE?" It was a proud moment and I actually forked over a DOLLAR for a single apple LOL
Ok I rambled on enough and probably shouldn't complain so much about the cost of feeding my kids healthier foods, but now that I'm temporarily out of work and pinching pennies, it's really getting to me :-(

If only people knew. What a joke.
Got Eggs ? (that will be the new slogan from the farmers) LOL I should prolly trademark it now. Ha Ha Ha

I used to LOVE bacon and every Saturday or Sunday my husband and I would consume and ENTIRE package, in one breakfast! Along with home fries, over easy eggs with salsa and cheese on top (huevos rancheros), refried beans cooked in th leftover bacon grease, and tortillas... The thought makes my stomach turn now!
I can't imagine how many calories and fat we consumed back then, but it could explain how my husband gained 40 pounds in the first year we were married LOL
Since I have started trying to feed my family healthier meals, and still kinda like the smell of bacon frying, I do make it but only occasionally. Maybe once or twice a month, much to my husband's chagrin lol... I think I pay about $2.49 for a package.
Now I use less than half a package, I just eat one strip myself (two if I feel like a glutton, but that second one doesn't count if I'm cooking and no one actually sees me eating it )
