ahh SP..welcome back...

I was told that mine is "black sable"...if she is not...then what is she? silver sable?
She is not red, or even tan, she is very light cream in her points....

Puppet If there is no such thing as a black sable explain why I can simply do a search and find many authoritative sites that list and illustrate  a black sable! o why not authenticate your information before you post it ! following is one site among many                http://www.shawlein.com/The_Standard/07_Colour_&_Pigment/Colour_&_Pigment.html

No what I am saying is if you look up the word sable, it is black or dark in color. I would call that girl a red sable but the pic is not the best and maybe it is just me.

I get tired of hearing black sable, the term is way over used and is actually an oxymoron.

LF & Yogi  You would be better off doing an Internet search  to find accurate and authoritative descriptions of the colors  of your dogs!   After reading Sp post I did a simple goggle search and found several doctors and phd's in the breeding and dog field who confirm the existence of black sables! Sp is sick of the term so it does not exist! typical of twisted minds

LF,

She is not what I call a dark sable. Usually you see toe penciling but her pics do not show it. Again by definition sable means black in color.

Right SP....because a sable is a sable, and the color "WE" use to describe it is related to the undercoat.... If there is a black sable..... LOL it would be SOLID black dog! Sable is the pattern of the top coat and ALWAYS black (no matter how faint or dark) Undercoat; red, or silver. The only variation from this is the patterned sable, Where the dog has sable markings exactly where the B&T dogs are black.

Well a sable is a sable, no matter what shade or pigment variations it has. To me the different "labels" given to sables just describes these variations. Black sable: more black pigment in the coat. Red sable: more red pigment in the coat. Grey/wolf sable: more lighter tan/greish pigment in the coat.
This is why the sable coloring is so fascinating(to me). It not only changes as the pup/dog gets older, it also changes seasonally and is different from dog to dog.
