Thanks guys for all of the input.. Yes I did wonder about the eye closing when he got the hit. (If that was bad or not.)  As I said it was quite a hit, and he didn't keep them closed, so maybe it was a flinch, that makes sense, like I said I flinched inwardly.. But reading Jen's post got me worried that he's too soft and maybe using the sleeve as a safe place.

Jen, Your post was awesome and thought provoking.  I was indeed talking about Galan, and I remember our conversation about handler soft dogs and whether he truly is or not, since on the field he tries to take advantage of me at every opportunity and I have to correct him hard to get him to listen. I have been working or rewarding him faster though and that seems to help. If he thinks there's nothing in it for him is when he disregards my commands. And he'll even try to steal the ball or tug from under my arm when I'm trying to not watch him and look ahead.

Jim mentioned the "drive" and it seemed very similar to Max's post about being in the zone... I can accidentally step on him at training and he doesn't care, yes I'm a klutz lol....

j.c, I can call my dog from anywhere in the house and he jumps over the coffee table, kids, couch, guests, who/whatever to get to me. He has never not come to me, ever that I can recall. Even on the rare occaion where he's jumped out of the car before I can grab his leash (which he doesn't do often) but I can call him and he comes right to me...On my very first trip to a Schutzhund field I was so nervous that I didn't latch the kennel door properly and heard "LOOSE DOG" and I just *knew* it was Galan... I yelled "Hier" and he came bounding up to me, even with dogs and handlers everywhere....
Of course I praise him, even though I'm gritting my teeth LOL

I am a wacko with my dogs too...When one of my dogs had a litter I let her whelp in the spare livingroom and had a kiddie pool in there. If the dam came out of the room say to see our company I'd point and tell her  "get back to your babies before I put them in a bucket of water" And she's do it... A little parlor trick that would leave my guests mortified LOL LOL

She's only weird in the house. Anywhere else (including the back yard, the dog-park, and a the training field) she has excellent recall. It used to concern me... then I got over it and accepted that my dog is "peculiar" *lol*

I think it might be because she's the omega of the pack, and she gets shoved out of the way by the other dogs when called over inside. But when I sound angry, the other dogs hesitate, and she knows I don't mean it? So she knows then she won't get body-slammed out of the way? *shrugs* I'm sure I don't know. She's a daffy little critter, but unquestionably the most clever I have.

Stace, I had a male dog once that was very stoic and not easily impressed by me. He was well mannered and biddable, etc, but it was hard for me to get much out of him working-wise. However, the helper got a lot out of him and this dog actually enjoyed stick hits. He totally turned on during working, obviously in drive, but at home he was like, "eh". lol

I like your parlor tricks story. I did something similar once when strangers were over. I had a litter of puppies. The puppies were in a pen, and seeing people wanted to come out of course and were causing all kinds of commotion. I said out loud, "All noisy puppies will be shot!". It was funny (to me), but I did get some strange looks. ha ha. I say things like that all of the time.  Why be normal? :-)
