I,ve got 14" fans on all my crates run by 3 12 volt trolling motor batteries all van windows are movable and a solar reflective blanket for over the top of the van even with no shade you would be supprised at the difference it makes in the van.

I feel for the officer and the dogs loss.

Bob, good idea, I have to make a cross border trip to pick up my new puppy next week and I want to do a bit of shopping in Bellingham on the way back, I was wondering what I would do to keep her cool if it was warm out.  Not sure how comfortable I am leaving my van completely unsecure at Bellisfair Mall.  LOL.

If the weather is too hot we will just skip the cross border shopping alltogether, but there are some good tips in this thread on how to keep dogs cool in cars.

In the HOT states...the Police Cruisers are equipped with Heavy Duty radiators and can run for a long long time...Every K-9 officer I know in Florida...while the dog is in the box in back...Leaves the cruiser running all the time...WITH...the A/C running...and then some of them do have the remote indicators to let them know if something goes wrong with their vehicle...
But with this all said...each department is different and depending on what they allow in their budgets is what they can get...Such as some of them have K-9 Bullet Proof Vests...and some don't...It just depends on the department's budget...

It would work with fans and maybe an ice bottle in the kennel if it is in the truck...BUt mine were at large ,,no good to me if in a crate so with  107 * tempts with makes the inside of your vehicle at least 145*  I do not think you can be able to make it proper.  I wouldnt want to even try.

We are haveing exremes all over USA this year.

Yesterday a friends   6 yr old  riding lawnboy commercial lawnmower burst into FLAMES  between the gas tanks behind him.  He lives on the lake Tyler and he kept thinking , boy my back is sure hot...WHen he discovered his flaming lawnmower, all he could think of is get OFF>>he could have run it into the lake and saved at least the tires , and some parts..but it  burnt to a crisp.

The reason it caught fire was      a small oil leak  down in rear   was so hot in the 105* heat yesterday and the running heat of the lawnmower ignited the oil and Whallah all gone...

Actually the same thing can happen on a torture day of heat like we are having on a patrol car or a truck , under the hood and burn the car up  with dog in it., also.

I believe this is what happened to the Fort Worth PD car, the fire started under the dash or hood and the car shut off and it was all over with.

Actually no answer but to not take that chance.

The heat this year is horrid all over.  Tuesday my husbands cousin died when he fell off his tractor due to heatstroke and was run over by the tractor and the brush hog which was running.  Sadly his wife found him just before he died.

This year, K9s in 6 states already:  Louisana, Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas customs... have died from handler negligence, being left in a car to die.

I dont have the national figues,  but too many  K9s die annually from heat stroke in warmer months in police Cruisers and all of it is preventable.

Why arent  more depts proavtive with alarms, fans and coolers for their dogs.?

Stats of K9 deaths dont appear to be accessible,  even Peta doesnt have such info, though they do petition many depts about dafety factors for animals.

That has happened here in Vegas and as it seems, its always some "family emergency". Thats the exact thing they said here. Sorry I dont buy it. The poor dog is gasping for its last breaths. Thats the emergency. Their attitude of "Oh well" needs to be replaced with "no pay for a month".  I mean really how hard is it to turn around on your heels and open the flippin cruiser door?
