Aaron, yeah, if the kennels are inside. I would never do that w/an inside kennel for that reason.
Jim, yep- another reason I lock them. You just always have those idiots who are "great with dogs- all dogs love me". I figure if they can't get to my dogs, then my dogs can't get to them, and then my likliehood of getting sued goes down dramatically,LOL.
Not to derail, but I think this thread is on its way out anyway, and the speculation is unfair and IMO not related to the guys who leave their dogs in hot cars, etc...................I came home one day to my gate being wide open- weird, since I had a 6' privacy fence with NO outside access whatsoever. There were only latches on the inside, top and bottom. No way you could open it from outside the yard. I had a couple dogs in kennels inside the yard, and one dog loose- the only one who didn't jump fences (at that point.) He was just a pup, maybe 8mos or so. Anyway, my pup greeted me in the driveway and I went around back to find out who had opened the gate. It turns out that the gas company was doing some work and needed to shut the gas off. Instead of asking ahead of time, or sending out a letter, they climbed my fence, opened the gate, and left it wide open! I was FURIOUS to say the least. What if my pup had wandered off and gotten hit by a car or something? Or stolen? What if he hadn't had the good sense to stay home? Or any number of things that could've happened. What if another dog had escaped his kennel and w/out the fence, left and bit someone? Want to bet Nicor wouldn't be liable???
My point is that you can think you've got it covered, but there is NO accounting for some people's degree of irresponsibility or stupidity. The guy who came back to finish the job(poor guy- imagine the earful he got) told me that they do that all the time, and they HAVE gotten people's dogs killed and they're not liable in any way due to easement law for utility companies! I understand they need access, but to dare climb my fence, unlock my gate, and LEAVE IT WIDE OPEN is totally inexcusable.
I cannot blame Dan's handler if someone in fact let the dog out. Any way you look at it, it's a horrible thing.

Very sad, and totally unfair to make speculations as to what happened. Clearly the whole story is not here, it never is. You think locks can't be broken or picked? Hell, if you put a lock on a hardware store-bought kennel, you'd only have to pull the pins on the other side of the door, pretty easy.
Most LEOs get very attached to their dogs, my heart goes out to this guy.

"GSDSRULE,
Guess what I pay taxes too, most of us with jobs do. Give me a break, do you really want me to answer your questions? I'm hoping they were just rhetorical."
Jim
Sure, go ahead and answer my questions. Why aren't there better controls on how these dogs are handled? I remember the dog that got out because "the wind twisted the kennel open." Sure it did.
The dog that was poisoned because it is kenneled with access to any thug that has a grudge.
And on and on and on. Over and over again, the dogs die.

GSDRULES,
I have answered these types of questions before and I'm not interested in going through it again. I think a little common sense and objective reasoning would answer those questions. I am also not going to respond to "countless stories," as I do not think it is countless but very quantifiable.
My crystal ball is not working at the moment; so I can only comment about what I do. I do not want to speculate on what others do or what happened with out knowing all of the facts.
"And on and on and on. Over and over again, the dogs die."
One of my pet peeves is generalizing and exaggerating claims, it is hard to factually address comments like that. I will disagree that is is "on and on and over and over" that police dogs die. I can factually tell you how many police dogs die each year in the line of duty. But most people on the PDB are not concerned with facts when talking about these incidents, or anything related to LEO's. I would say one is too many, especially when it is an off duty incident. I can appreciate and understand your emotion on this horrible tragedy.
Please don't take my post the wrong way, I do not mean to offend you. I just find it pointless to get into these discussions on the PDB. Like many other topics they seem futile to me.
It is a very unfortunate sad tragedy.
