Sam,

No, my friend isn't Mitch!  And I don't believe in this sillyness either....It's just another gimic much like the traveling medicine man from the 1800's if you ask me!

MainlyMax,

Do you cook your beef fat?

Vickie ,

I don't, but it might not be a bad idea.  The butcher I use, owns a German shepherd and is conscientious.
But try to get your cuttings set aside and rapped, as the butcher is doing his trimming. This way, there is less contamination.

Sillyness and hogwash indeed.   I never ever needed anything to get bitches with litters..in Fact had to get stronger kennels and more distance to PREVENT  litters.

Less stress and a well fed dog has not a thing in the world to worry about . Genetics is the other key like someone said.

IF dog is older, test him and nothing there, he is not to breed.  It takes  TWO HEALTHY PROSPECTS   not just one.

I believe if its meant to be, it will be...If not, than it shouldn't be forced...I do not breed very often, (second litter in 12yrs, due Aug 4th) but before that, never had any problems when doing a breeding. Just like to let it be the will of the Lord...Thats just my opinion. I'm not saying that is how everyone should think.

Vickie,
If you have bitch that is not coming into heat, the only thing I ever heard was
Raspberry leaves. Don't ask how they work, but the old timers used them with  some success.
You might want to google that first.

Yellow Rose,
Any time someone says performance, I think of above and beyond the norm.
For every day dogs you are right in your view I would say.  But I think Vickie is asking is
there anything that might enhance the performance of her dogs, and is there something
to help with fertility.  Two different question. But in general I think everyone should increase
the fat in their dogs diet. Alot of people my disagree, but  have never competed.

In the maternal diet, a lower fat - higher protein diet will produce a greater portion of male pups among the litter (as much as 2:1), while a higher fat - lower protein diet will produce a greater proportion of female pups (as much as 1:2).

When everyone seems to always wish for males, it sounds like a great idea, until you have them and everyone suddenly wants females!  I had two litters born within a week of each other, where there were 8 males in each litter of 11 pups.  Suddenly the females seemed "special" to the prospective buyers.

Noooo, it is all the same question......breeding performance or libido and sperm production in the male and increased ovulation in the female.  Not performance in the sence of working performance on the field.

I do believe that genetics determine the amount of eggs a female releases while in heat and you can't increase egg production with suppliments such as OxyMate or breed heat.....whatever the heck that is!

MainlyMax:  You are absolutely correct about lower protein , not to burn up a liver and higher Fat..I preach to all my puppy buyers...read labels..not one df has proper fat. some do have higher and do use those..But I have always used high fat and my dogs are very lean but they are non stop even though I do not work them in sport any long and have not for several years.

But it has to be the right kind of fat ,not bacon grease.....lol

I go get beef trimmings for Super One every now and then since my personal butcher sold all his cows.

Yellow Rose,
I know the hunters insist on more protein for their dogs,
some of  those breeders around Huston or in the south that go on hunting
frolics with there dogs. They can be out there for days. The Blue tick hounds,
catahoulas, and such, baying hounds. Even a Labrador if he is doing alot work hunting and swimming.

I have a female that if I don't keep her on a high protein diet she begins to lose a little muscle tone.
Mainly because I will work her almost every day and she is just balls out every day.

But the fat is equally important if not more important..... Fatty acids--> Hormones

Grains are carbohydrates---->triglycerides

Daryle,

I was thinking "hogwash" about your  post, until I thought about it.  Intuitively,  from an evolutionary standpoint, it would seem that high  fat/lower  protein would produce more females, because it would be indicative of food being more abundant with the prey sources getting lots to eat, hence more fat on the hoof.  In leaner times, the prey would have less food, too, and be a lot leaner.   So, the food sources would be lower in fat.   More males, with the greater opportunity/ability to reproduce, would safeguard the species continuance better than more females, during lean times.
