All the Pacific Salmonidae (salmon, trout, whitefish) http://zipcodezoo.com/Key/Animalia/Salmonidae_Family.asp
can carry a parasite which can be fatal to dogs if the fish is fed raw.

While freezing does kill parasites, it has to be done for a certain period of time and below 20C in order to kill all the parasites, so those of you who are relying on this method might want to read this article: http://seafood.ucdavis.edu/PUBS/nematodes.htm
I feed other kinds of raw fish or canned mackeral to my dogs at least once a week. When I feed raw fish, I feed the whole fish, including the bones.

Thank you for that info. I guess I will poach all my salmon from now on . Although I have a commercial freezer and have freezed it for more than 7 days, I am not sure of the exact temp. Glad I never have a problem, but do not want one. I eat sushi and have never had a problem either.

Interesting sites Sue, I also feed canned fish, Jack Mackeral and my dogs absolutely love it. I'd like to try the salmon but it's pretty expensive and if I cook it I'll eat it myself LOL
The Jack Mack doesn't hold the same appeal for me and I feed it right out of the can juice and all.

I can't take the smell of Mackerel,
I do like canned Salmon tho, and yes I will eat it myself if the dogs don't behave...lol
I would be cautious of some fish bones by the way.

The Eskimos used to kill polar bears by dropping pieces of seal meat with whale baleen inside of them. The pieces of baleen would be coiled up and cut to a point at each end. When the seal meat thawed, it would release the sharpened baleen pieces and puncture the polar bear's stomach and intestines. Baleen is the flexible, bony plates whales use to filter their food out of the water.

I feed the canned fish too but also fed other types of frozen whole fish (talapia and whatever was cheap). The dogs don't really like the scales but did end up eating it all. Fish bones are very small and bendy when uncooked, I never lost a wink of sleep worrying about it.

Once upon a time someone gave me 40 catfish for the dogs. I very carefully cut all those horrifying spines off them with dykes; they were unbelievably large and sharp, and I was bleeding all over the place from the job. I heaped all the spines in a little pile and began bagging up the fish to freeze. Next thing I knew the pile was gone and my rotten bitch was smacking her lips. Freaked me right out...but she never missed a step. They get so porous and weak while in that stomach acid...I figure if those things didn't hurt her, no bones would.
I understand that salmon needs to be frozen for 3 weeks before being fed to dogs.
Oh, and the dogs ate two catfish each over the next week, and refused to touch fish ever again.

Yes Mackeral is good for dogs.A friend in the south swore that it got rid of worms in her dog. I have no scientific info on that though. The fish I gave my dogs was trout. They were fine from it.It was previously frozen though and when i was a kid there was a trout farm I went to and they would feed this Golden Retriever the guts and head of the fish. This dog was healthy and had the best coat I have ever seen!! I mostly stick to elk or beef for the dogs though.
