Jackal73

But why only at night? ... as soon as it gets dark about 8:00pm he goes off non-stop

Maybe because that's the time that someone else in the distance lets *their* dogs out, who promptly start barking, and your boy is answering.  Then they feed back into each other and it keeps going.  The precipitating dogs could be out of your hearing range, but not your dog's.

Or he could be "boredom" barking -- saying "I'm here, I'm here, won't someone answer me/come be with me".  Boredom barking tends to be flatter and duller in tone, while the communication bark tends to have a rise in it, and the dog pauses to listen for a response at regular intervals.  As to why he only starts it at night, dogs are creatures of habit.  Mine have always known when we're getting near to walk time -- and if I'm sometimes preoccupied with something else will let about 10-15 minutes go by before whimpering to remind me of the time! The answer in both communication and boredom barking cases is to bring the dog in and keep him occupied so he's neither bored nor lonely.

Geez...haven't you ever watched 2001 Dalmations? It's the Evening Bark! If it's common enough to be fodder for a Disney flick, it's probably pretty common. I think Jackal73 hit the nail on the head, & somewhere in the middle is some poor slob getting barked from both directions! jackie harris

Non of my dogs are barking at night BUT I do have one that starts to bark at precisely 5.30 am every morning.  It does only last until I get out of bed to yell at her to be quiet, the moment I open the door she is quiet. Yes, go figure.
Seriously it could be foxes, ducks, rabbits or even the old wombat that is late getting back to his burrow, these dogs do have incredible hearing so there is very little that we can do to stop barking at certain times of day.
