Also, how much tan before you call a dog a blanket black and tan?

I would conside the dog Ingo that was posted above a blanket.

So what would you call Lex ?

This is Raven, a melanistic bicolor. I have his half sister, Xtian, who looks a lot like him, except she's still a baby.

I hate to be a party pooper, but probably half the dogs pictured are not bicolors.

Jenn can you explain? Point out who is and who isn't? And why.

Im not trying to call you out, just looking to learn. It can be fun to learn somthing new.  :D

"Call me out" all you want. ;-)

There have been about a bazillion threads about what is and is not a bicolor. I'm not going to be so repetitive as to post it all again, but I'll see if I can't dig up the links.

Your dog is not a bicolor but a black and tan.

Which one? Lol. If its Lex then yes i call him a black and tan. Above that i posted Bandit, which looks like every other bi color I have seen. And I guess shadow could be up on the air.

To me a good bi looks like a beautiful black, till you get to the legs. A little tan on the face is fine, but  not a lot. Thats what I have always been told as well.

Cant wait to se the links

There are more specific rules than that, but I also was going to say Ingo is not a bicolor. I can't see Bandit well enough to tell.

A true bicolor will have toe penciling and tar heels, and if there is tan on the face, should only be tiny "eyebrow" spots or a brush on the cheeks. No tan behind the ears should be present. The entire underside should be solid black.

I can't find any links. I even tried googling "pedigree database" and "bicolor" b/c I know we have had half a dozen of these threads in the past few months w/tons of really good pics of what is and is not a bicolor...maybe someone else can find them. The search feature is not my best skill.

 Hey Sitas Mom,

Beautiful dog, but NOT a Bi-color. If you would do a little research, instead of working on breeding your PLUSH coat, you would know this. You should quit peddling Eurosport dogs, you are going to tarnish their good name.

This is what I base my decision on dog markings. The article (see hyperlink below) goes into great detail and is very informative.
