You wouldn't be able to see wax at the bottom of the ear canal just by looking normally as it is the deepest part inside the ear. If it's itchy and red it sounds like it could be something like wax or maybe the start of a yeast infection which is irritating her. I am puzzled why the vet shaved the hair inside the ear. It's good to hear her ear has come back up. I hope you can get to the bottom of things and she will feel better soon.

The ear isn't back up except at times. It's the right ear which is up due to the cone now.

Wow, almost looks like a rash, with ALL of those bumps...doesn't seem like just one bump, but many tiny ones...Maybe this is from the vet shaving it, all the tiny bumps???

If she had a bump in her ear and now a scab, she likely does have an infection in the skin and it is important to get this under control so the inflammation does not end up weakening her ear. The cause of the redness could be this infection, even in a few hair follicles, or the lymph channels, or deep down. It could be from shaving, but I doubt it. My suggestion is that you need the vet to look at this again and consider some systemic antibiotics. Good luck. She looks like she has a nice mask and good pigment.

I took her back to the vet yesterday and they gave me Otomax to rub on the ear where it's irritated. Nothing is in the ear canal as of yesterday with the vet's ear light.  Here is what she looks like today. I am also giving her Benadryl for comfort if it is itchy. I called the vet to ask about a systemic antibiotic but they are closed. I have Amoxicillin 500 mg on hand. She weighs 41.7 lbs. Anyone know if  that's the usual dose for that weight?  I also have some Amoxicillin 250 mg and Erythomycin 250 mg.

Oh, and the vet did do cultures of the ear yesterday and it showed bacteria, plenty of it, no yeast. I'm worried too that something systemic is going on especially since the ear went down for a couple days with no redness at all before I took her to the vet the first time.

gsdlvr2,

Sent you a PM.

The OP has requested I post my PMs to her.

The ears both look slightly inflamed. It is possible to have an infection brewing without obvious signs. And more so, if the infection is on the inside of the ear drum. The fact that the pup's ears have been up and down is of no real consequence at this point as when they are young, even after they stand, they can go down and often will go down if there is something bothering the dog. Most bacteria and fungi of interest don't do well in an acidic environment, so spraying some apple cider vinegar/water 50:50 mixture (or isopropyl alcohol/water mix - same ratio) can be of use, but it can also be a problem if there is any open wound and I would never want to use this unless I was absolutely certain the tympanic membrane was intact (as it presumably is here). If there is a scab there, one wonders whether there is some sort of infection in the ear from an insect bite or a scratch.

Ear infections can be tricky. If the wrong medication is used, it can create a worsening problem. And also remember that many drugs used for ear infections are ototoxic and if overused, besides the organisms becoming resistant, can lead to deafness.

The OP must rule out the pup scratching the ear and that as the cause of the redness. Systemic antibiotics might be indicated if the dog is not making this problem and the Otomax does not seem to be helping. The right anti-fungal has to be used, depending on what the yeast is. Normally it is Malassezia species.

Anytime an ear infection is not resolved with treatment, it is a good idea to ask for a culture and sensitivity test to find out what organism/s is/are involved and what the appropriate medication is.

The dose for amoxicillan can be looked up, but it is best that the right agent be prescribed by someone who is actually looking at the body part of interest.

Poor puppy!  Hodie has some good advice.  I there is no marked improvement by Monday, back to the vet or find another vet.  Good luck with this little sweetie.
