My pups are WL/SL crosses, & they're terrific! I really think that breeders need to find outstanding individuals that possess the qualities that compliment the dogs they are using, & of course they are hopefully using outstanding individuals to begin with. They should have a goal in mind, a type they are trying to achieve within the breed standard. Pedigrees are good to get a generalized idea of where you're going, but the individuals chosen must have the qualities being sought to improve the breed, irregardless of whether they are showlines or workinglines. Does that make any sense? jackie harris

my one and only experience with mixing show/working lines was not good ,the temp. was very bad.

the drives was very good.

i do think it could work if you really thoughly research your lines and use the good  working lines.

as some of them are not the best to use, i have show lines so i know which ones are good on that side.

temp is a big deal too me with good drives....

MY DINKLETS ARE A WORKING LINE HIGHLINE CROSS.  THEY ARE 6 WKS AND 1 DAY OLD AND WILL LOCK ONTO ANYTHING AND GO TO WORK.  ONLY TIME WILL TELL BUT THEY ALREADY HAVE THE LOOK.

I didn't mean "beautiful" as in banana backs or hock walkers, I meant coloring and the saddle pattern.  In my opinion at one point all German Shepherds were working, they split when people starting breeding for the "appearance" more than working ability, why else would we have a showline, wouldn't all German Shepherds be just that German Shepherds?  My girl who is wl/sl is nowhere near a banana back or hock walker, I'm saying I like her coloring, markings, and she has that working line drive.

why should the coloring and saddle pattern be so desired when it's not even the dominant pattern and color?

by missyfly96 on 12 April 2010 - 14:04

Why else did the German Shepherd split into working and showline?

For me, the coloring is the least important factor in producing a litter. Free from genetic defects is top priority.Actually, that runs neck n neck with the temperment. I insist on great temperments. Fortunately, I have been extremely lucky with the dogs I already have, in both departments.

Now, i find myself loving these dogs looks   To breed a working dog like this, to my female here,, I think would be great looking dogs, with excellant drives, and I could only hope for the temperment of my girl. She is a kevin Murrtal grand-daughter.(She is just 1 yr., so I still have a long way to go before breeding)

Of course free from genetic faults and a great temperment is what every breeder wants.  With that aside why did the German Shepherd split into wl or sl if it wasn't for a certain group of people want that particular look?

Be more concerned with the individuals and less with the lines themselves.
Get out of the tunnel and step into the light.

It's not a stupid question, it's been asked over and over time and time again.

So many things to consider.
