It's a good possibility that the pic posted by the OP is going to stay dark and it's definately a sable but I agree with the others that there's some skeptism on the parents pics posted as being the Sire and Dam of this pup.  As the weeks progress you will start to see the colors change.

i think the pup will stay dark, but where is the sable parent as one must be sable.

i really like the mother she looks very nice.

Um - the pup is dark sable with nice red from the mother - but the sire can't be the correct sire.  The sire MUST be a sable dog to produce sable puppies with the black/red dam.  I'm assuming the dam is known for sure LOL - so who is the sire?  It is not the dog pictured, that is 100% sure.  He CANNOT sire sable puppies with a black/red female.  NO CHANCE.

"The dam is a light sable" - no, she is a black/red - unless the pictured dam is not the correct one.

Remember that thread we had going about sables that many of us thought looked black/red but others insisted were sable based on baby pictures? Could this bitch possibly be sable?  She looks about as sable to me as the ones posted on that thread...

I'm thinking that the coloring will be like its dam, but the markings will be like the sire.

there is some "ticking" on both parents, but not enough to call either a sable.

bazza - you are once again proving the point I made earlier........ please leave me alone. I'd hate to start reporting your abusive comments again!

the dam is not a sable.  She is black/red.  It is apparent by the picture, I am sure she is not a sable dog.

I hate to ask a stupid question, but I have never bred a sable or produced a sable puppy. Based on genetics, is it POSSIBLE that if both parents carry for sable they could produce a sable puppy?  I really do want to know the answer...I'm into black/red and solid black...

by eichenluft on 29 March 2010 - 16:03

No.  Sable is dominant over all other colors.  So, in order for there to be any sable gene "carried" by a dog, the dog would BE a sable dog.  There is no "sable recessive" unless it's a second sable gene carried by a sable dog.
