Two Moons

by Two Moons on 18 March 2010 - 06:03

I guess to be honest, I based much of how I've done this on William Koehlers Method of Guard Dog Training book, with reservations.   Not word for word.  It can be found in some libraries.
I new people who were for lack of a better word bad, and they would never be coming to my home, they would help out tho for a paid fee.
Socializing teaches the dog that people are good, they already know this and can sense it, but you need to do a different sort of socializing introducing the dog to people who are bad, the dog will sense this too, your just refining what the dog already knows with exposure and practice.
Then you must build confidence in the dog around these people with exercises.
Flanking is covered in the book and it's the first step and very simple, you need a harness and a strong chain attached to an immovable object and some prefer a little give, I used a powerful spring from a garage door.
And you need this stranger, someone who is real, the dog will know, they smell it, sense it.
This could be done outside at home depending on your circumstances.

The key to success is a convincing helper and socializing so the dog learns the difference.
Obedience is a must so you can control the dog once instincts kick in.

You don't have to go full fledged protection just this knowledge of the difference and a little added confidence.
The dog has to have the courage tho.    Some do not.   But they bark good and make a good show.

P.S.
If the dog does not have the courage, do not create a fear biter.

You need to get some Professional Help to assit you. You want the correct reactions from him, as your daughter gets older will want to bring in friends when you're not around. He needs to understand the difference and take direction. I have learned when it comes to the actual PP training it is best left to the pros, can ruin a dog if not done correctly. Can you get help from you Sch club?

Well, I try to not associate with "bad" people Moons... LOL, but I could probably find some scraglers at Home Depot or something. I will start this weekend. How the heck am I supposed to find some bad guy to piss off my 2 year old GSD??? I am going to have to take a loan out for that one!

Actually you can use anyone who can play the role and this is described in the book, ad a few smells to an attitude and this should do.
I just know the dog can sense character, fear, malicious intent on a human.
Be sure your mail man has doggie treats and that you introduce him as a friend..lol

I don't do Sch, I think Mondio and FR, dabble in a little PSA, my sports of choice. My trainer will know what I am doing, but it will be home based. I am not looking for a PP dog, just a deterrant.

I think less is better as well without some qualified help.

A simple flanking by a stranger is enough to arouse suspicion of strangers

My daughter also does OB with him, I have always had her do this because she will be with him when I am not around. She has complete control as well. She helps me daily and will be our next generation... I am so proud!

If they are that close I think all it would take would be a scream and the dog would really maul someone in defense of your daughter.

Thank you so much. I will go look tomorrow for the book, and see if I have any strange looking friends that will trust me when I say " I promise! I won't let him bite you!"
