IMO….That vet clinic could probably care less about the health of your dog and its immune system, Its all about how much money they can make..

You do know that a one year rabies vaccine and a three year are the same vaccine don't you? It's another little hidden up-charge because if you ask for a three year they know they will probably lose you for a couple of visits and money is lost. Kind of like the Science Diet push. Vet students are given free food by the Hill's company while they attend med school for I believe, 3 pets. Free food for the whole time they are in school and special kickbacks for promoting all of the Hill's specialty diets after they graduate. And really when you get down to it, most of our dogs are over vaccinated, which a titer test will prove. It is a bit expensive but in the long run probably better for the animal.

"Check the laws, follow the rules, and picket the location.
Contact the local news media."
I'd certainly go great guns with my complaint against this vet, but wouldn't picket and wouldn't contact the local news media UNLESS you are prepared to be blasted by the people who will be furious with that vet for allowing their dogs to be hospitalized in the same place with unvaccinated dogs. Some people will be just as furious with the vet because of that, as most of us are in the other direction, especially if you live in one of the areas of the country that is seeing a rise in distemper cases.

It takes a while to get through because it is a slide presentation given at a veterinary conference, but, the info is invaluable concerning vaccines.
Google Jean Dodds also.
As for the vet...................................

I have to say I have little sympathy here with someone who is "horrified" over something like this. Get a life people. This is common practice all over the country. I have had hundreds of GSDs in my custody and many were vaccinated at the time of neutering, spaying or other minor procedures. One time, a dog developed an abscess that was surely from an improper vaccination site. But I dealt with it. It was not the end of the earth, and it did not dramatically affect the life of the dog.
I would really like to see some of you deal with situations without vets. Are there poorly trained vets in this country? Sure, but more than half our citizenry cannot read or comprehend the language. Are there people who cheat? Who take advantage of people in their practices? Sure, but most vets are capable, caring people who have sacrificed a lot to get a license. I spent thousands and thousands of dollars out of my own pocket over the years to take care of hundreds of GSDs, but I could not have done what I did do without the free services of vets all over the area.
I don't want to get into an argument about vaccinations in general, but for so many, it is all the rage to not vaccinate simply because you read it on the internet. It must be true........ Frankly, there are some things in life that horrify me, but they involve situations that are far, far different from something like this. For instance, it "horrifies" me to think of someone in Haiti having a crushed limb amputated with a hack saw and without anesthesia. That really bothers me and is not even close to the scale of this complaint.
Complain to the vet personally by writing a letter. Switch vets. Don't vaccinate your dog. Complain to the state vet board. And next time you have an emergency, I hope you can take care of it yourself. Some of you get way off base on these vet threads. If you would put one ounce of your indignation into all the dogs who are homeless and all the poor quality breedings going on, we would all be a lot better off. If you would put real money into the Morris Foundation or other vet medical care research, we would all be better off.
Finally, if you were in a court, the first thing that a court would want proven is whether there was harm done. Given that this is not anything you can prove relative to a dog being vaccinated for bordetella or distemper, I would bet that your case would be dismissed. Find another vet. It is that simple.
One other thing......why not go take some classes on immunology or virology. That might help give you a better perspective on the issue of to vaccinate or not to vaccinate, how useful titers are, how often mistakes are made, what the numbers mean etc. etc. Then one might be able to put such a heinous act as vaccinating a dog into perspective.

The most stupid thing is leaving your dog at the vet... I had dogs for more than 30 years and I always was with them when the vet did his job...!!!

Thanks Hodie,
You are correct of course,
I was just hoping for more drama, I can't seem to get enough this morning.
Too much Coffee perhaps.
Moons.

I really don't care who I piss off (in case anyone doesn't know that already), but picketing isn't super convenient for me. It's a wee bit cold, and I have a tiny baby.
OF COURSE I know about the one year vs. 3 yr rabies....I ok'd the rabies the week before. The dog bites; he needs the shot for his own protection. I also paid a $116.25 "intact fee" on top of the price of the shot. In my old county the fee was $150.
I pretty much hate most vets. I have a few that I skip around to for different things when needed. Mostly rabies and health certificates. I didn't think removing a lump was rocket science and I really thought even the dumbest, greediest vet was smart enough to know you can't just vaccinate someone's dog against their explicit directions. I guess I underestimated just how ignorant some of them are.
Moons, I don't really know what I want. I want them to never do this to another animal, for one. What I want isn't really the point. I'ts more about what has just been "undone." For his entire life, I have planned very carefully and fed him very carefully and monitored every single medical procedure (not many) he's ever had. I drove him over 3 hours to a different state to have him xrayed w/out anesthesia. I have very specific ideals on how they should be cared for. Like I said, agree or disagree, it's not their choice. It's mine.
Money is certainly not the issue here; the issue is that he got a F'ING COCKTAIL SHOT of all things, when I TOLD THEM NOT TO. I cannot take that f'ing poison out of his body. This is what infuriates me. They have undone the better part of a decade's worth of conscious effort to keep my animals as healthy as possible, according to MY BELIEFS. Last I checked, animals were still property and HE IS MINE to choose what's best for.
I'm afraid you'd see ME on the news if I went back to that place. My temper is sometimes a tad on the fiery side...I better stick to written words and legal channels.
Just to summarize, one week after a 3 yr rabies shot, this dog had, in ONE DAY:
Sedation
Anesthesia
Surgery
Distemper shot
Hepatitis shot
Parvovirus shot
Bordetella vaccine
....And this was all done on a dog suspected of suffering from CANCER!!!
