Quote by Maggie Mae: What is your opinion as to why "conventional" Vets are against raw feeding? I give my dog raw egg yolks and ground beef; however, my Vet told me to nuke them.....but I still give it to him uncooked.

My regular vet (conventional) claims there is a risk of Salmonella and E-coli. My holistic/conventional vet  said there is a slight risk of getting Salmonella or e-coli, but it is extremely rare, especially if you are feeding human grade inspected meat.  But think about it, there is also a risk of getting contaminated dog food, as we know all too well.  According to my holistic/conventional vet  (BTW her name is Maggie) the conventional vets are just stuck in their ways. They've been trained in vet schools to do things a certain way and they are sticking with waht they have learned.

My conventional vet (who is more open to change than most) told me recently that he is certain that by the end of his career (he is in his 40's) that annual vaccines will be obsolete. He does not vaccinate his own dogs annually and he said slowly but surely the vet schools are changing their vaccine protocols. There is increasing evidence that annual vaccines do more harm than good and that the antibodies stay in the dogs system for 7-10 years according to current studies...so why are most  vets still having their clients get their dogs vaccinated annually?  I don't know! In the meantime it may take another 20 years before all vets are on the same page. Of course the holistic vets have been saying annual vaccines aren't necessary for at least the past 20 years. I think it will just be a matter of time befroe the conventional vets are more receptive to the raw feeding...maybe a VERY long time though.

My Vet is probably in her mid-late 30's....so, I was surprised that she is so against raw feeding.   Regarding the vaccinations, my Vet gives a Titer Test for level of immunity....therefore, annual vaccinations are only given if needed.

Hooray for your vet! Glad to hear that about the titers.  Another thought came to mind after I sent my last post. My conventional vet was most opposed to raw due to the handling issue and contamination. He said he knew me and how particular I was so he was not terribly concerned, but he said he'd still prefer I cooked the food.

BTW you may be wondering why I have a conventional vet and a holistic/conventional vet. I live in Florida, but go to NC a lot. Our regular conventional vet is in Davie, FL and the holistic/conventional vet is in Boone, NC. I also consult with a holistic vet here in FL, but she is quite radical in her approach to treatment so I have to temper what she tells me. When my dogs have an issue I try the holisitc approach first and if I don't see results I resort to my conventional vet.  I love Maggie, the holistic/conventional vet in Boone because she is not extreme either way. I wish she was here in South Florida!
