Best bet with a Dyson is to return it just before the warrrenty runs out and get a new one, they typically start to fail after about 14 months. but they will almost certainly be noticeably less efficient within the warranty time. Was the case with my one, but I didn't see the writing on the wall and kept it too long. A friend of mine is on her third one in as many years, but she was less forgiving than me when the efficiency started to drop, they are pretty pricy for their durability in regular service.

I have a DC17 and it is a very tough unit as long as I keep the cones emptied out periodically. If I don't it loses suction and the motor heats up and throws the breaker, turning itself off until it cools down. If this happens too many times it will harm the main motor and shorten its life and will clog up the head and belt/drive in the head. Cleaning out thecones restores it to 100% suction.
I have had a dc 7 for probably 5years ... it has never lost suction, I wash the filters reguarly, don't overfill it past the line and take it apart regularly for cleaning once the dirt stops swirling I take it apart.. You guys have the newer one but I am very happy with mine
...
Jeez, I didn't even know it HAD filters....where the heck are they?
I take mine apart about every 6 months now. My hair screws with it more than the pet hair. My stuff gets all tangled in the brushes and they quit spinning. I just shake the crap out of it, hose it all out and let it dry for a couple days and we are back in business. Never spent a dime to service it or get a new filter. Had mine at least 3 yrs now, still lovin it. It's the DC 7 animal.
Sigh. The things you learn on this board. OK, I found the filter, and after 3 years it isn't too bad. I just slapped it around and it released dust. The thing never did lose suction......in case you think my house is full of dog hair!
OK it is.
2 words....SHOP VAC! LOLOLOL! jackie harris
"Smiling" Didn't that gent on the TV say it never loses suction?
All vacuums lose suction. Full bags, clogged filters, whatever.
I share YR's opinion...I have a Rainbow. No filters to clog up...Everything goes into the water and while you have to dump it each time, and clean it out, and you're not supposed to store the unit on the water basin, it is a really good machine...Very effective for removing hair and all sorts of debris from carpet, rugs, and everything else. Wouldn't trade it for anything!!
Dyson is pretty pricey (less than the Rainbow...two thousand is what ours cost), but still, if my rainbow lasts for twenty five or thirty years, and it runs 2K, and you pay five hundred several times to replace yours, which is cheaper?

dyson the best vac for the money period.
mine is going on 10 years so in thirty years i will spend 1500.00 or less and you spent 2000.00 which is cheaper? plus you have to lug around the rainbow i can pretty much do everything with one finger. i can probably vac and put everything away in as much time as it takes you to setup the rainbow. which is cheaper?

I have a collection of Electrolux cannister Vacs from the 50s, which I inherited from various family houses that got shut down as the older generation died off. I think I have 4 or 5 of them, along with the most amazing collection of bizarre attachments you ever saw. I used those for most of my life, until I bought the Dyson 3 years ago. OK. It's amazing that I ever HEARD of the Dyson. No way had I ever heard of this Rainbow contraption! I only JUST crawled into the 21st century. I'm pretty much stuck in 1954 or so. Maybe next time I'll get really adventurous and get a Rainbow!
Crys, do you have CARPETING?
