I just realized something funny. The title of this thread...
I, as I'm sure all of you, assumed correctly what would be contained within, someone with a new puppy that needed some advice, right? Imagine the same thing posted on a generic dog message board. Some would assume from the title that it's eaten one of the children! ROFL

Hi, I know of a breeder in Hawaii that does Schutzhund training at the Aloha Schutzhund Club of Hawaii. He is a very nice guy. He has a dog named Ziska that will be in a 2010 movie - You May Not Kiss The Bride. He might be worth contacting for club info. www.shepherdsbykimo.com/

Here is a Schutzhund video from the above website link.

This book is a must have for you! Purely positive training by Sheila Booth; ISBN 0-9663020-0-1 ! reasonably priced and can be ordered on line! In my scant two years of GSD ownership I have found that the owner -handler is the one who needs the training firstly and foremostly! You will find a wealth of information on this board but read all you can:find a GOOD schutzhund club! You may go through three or four clubs before finding one that suits your needs! as mentioned before Leerburg is a good resource! And visit the united schutzhund clubs of america for further information! the german shepherd dog world is a daunting task to assimilate into! I find that knowledge of traing and repetition and a lot of patienceis mandatory! find an obedience trainer to train you and your dog and a club and never give up! The bond you will make between you and your dog is like nothing else you can experience!

Congrats on your pup! You are now the proud owner of a land shark. Welcome to our world. LOL!
Start training NOW! There are some good examples on youtube under puppy training. Remember to be fair and consistent. If it means no now...it is no forever, not just sometimes. Try first to redirect him when he bites. GIve him a toy that he enjoys chewing on. If that doesn't work try holding his muzzle firmly and tell him no when he bites. If this fails and he doesn't get the point lay him down abruptly on his side and hold him there by the side of his neck and don't let him up until he submits by avoiding your eyes and licking. Give a firm "NO" while doing this. This is simply the alpha telling the pup who is boss. It won't hurt him nor will it interfere with any Schutzhund training later. He needs to know what the rules and boundries are. He needs to know right now that you are the boss...he will challenge you multiple times as he grows...it's natural. Remember at all times...he is a dog. Not your baby, your wittle snookums etc. Dogs need to know who the leader of the pack is or they will become the leader and you won't like the path they lead you down.
He should be trained to sit, to down and come by now. You can accomplish it in a matter of minutes. Use treats to reward him and he will catch on quickly. Never hit him to correct him. Stop on a good point. If he gets tired or confused you have gone too far. Give it up until the next day. Give him lots of opportunities to play and he will learn as you play.

The above video is an excellent example of how to work a young puppy.
