Need Someone Who Understands German (Warning: large photo!) - Page 2

Silbersee, I've managed to locate an online copy of Max's book:  www.archive.org/stream/derdeutschesc00step#page/n0/mode/2up

He is VERY specific in identifying photos, and when he says German Shepherd, I believe he IS referring to our breed.

I can't find this particular picture in the book, so either it is not from his book, or was in one of the earlier editions. The one I've linked to above is the sixth edition.

I do not need or want to look up that particular photo in the book. It does not matter what is meant but looking at these dogs - if this is actually a picture from the old edition - different kinds of sheepherding dogs were used to create our breed (shaggy, wirehaired, stockcoated etc.) from Thueringen and Wuerttemberg mainly.
I am German and I do know my own language. We make a fine but very distinct difference in where we place our words.
Stockhaarige Deutsche Schaeferhunde - Stockhaired German Shepherd Dogs
Deutsche stockhaarige Schaeferhunde - German stockhaired shepherd dogs (or sheepherding dogs).
Our breed is called Deutscher Schaeferhund and not just Schaeferhund. The word "Schaeferhund" describest a generalization of sheepherding dogs in our language. So for me, the second term "Deutsche stockhaarige Schaeferhunde" was a generalization for stockhaired sheepherding dogs, especially due to their appearance.
I just wanted to be helpful with a translation. Sorry for butting into your thread, it won't happen again. Should know better.

I did study German for a couple of years, but my skills are a bit rusty. I am, however WELL aware there is a difference between a 'Schaeferhund' and a 'Deutsche Schaferhund'. 

Max clearly identifies the Wurtemburger and other types of shepherds by name and/or the place they came from. He does NOT identify them as German, even if they did originate in Germany. Instead, he gives the name of the town or region.  As nearly as I could tell from browsing through the photos, the only time he used the words "Deutsche Schaeferhund" was for dogs registered with the SV, or their immediate ancestors.

But then again, that painting may not be from his book.

Being german as well (living only since 9 years in the US) .... Chris said it all. The print could read as well "Belgischer Stockhaariger Schaferhund" per example. The syntax of our language is often difficult to grasp. If the "Deutsch" would refer directly to the breed of GSD, it would read " Stockhaariger Deutscher Schaferhund".
