Holy Toledo, she's having a bad time. Hopefully the Holidays will cheer her up....

Thanks for the info hodie.  I thought if I wasn't infected myself that I couldn't be contagious, but I guess it's just a case of being not symptomatic, but still a carrier.  No worries about other ailments.  I'm not one who cheaps out on regular vaccinations, or is scared to get them.  My vet has counseled me about the lack of need to do annual rabies vaccines now so we're on a three year spread, but otherwise the dog gets the full stack since he does have to be kenneled occasionally when I travel for work.   The stuff that worries me is what I can't vaccinate for -- and like the rest of you I was instantly worried about the dog's welfare with this news about H1N1.  We all have our priorities it seems!

 Again Jackal,

I understand the concern, but so far, knock on wood, such cases are rare. Just something to know about......just in case.

1doggie2, sorry for your mothers' problems too. Hopefully things will improve for her too. Loosing people and animals one loves is never, ever easy. I am sure she appreciates the love and support you show her.

Heh.  I must have mis-spoken.  I meant to say I understood your reassurance, and won't worry about it, and was thanking you for the help.  Sometimes I'm not as clear as I'd like -- English isn't my first language, and at the moment I'm suffering from a cold myself, so things are a little... wobbly.  Sorry for any confusion.

by hodie on 22 December 2009 - 23:12

Hello Jackal.

Your English is very, very good for it not being your native language. Sadly, it is far better than some here for whom English is their native language.

I am sorry you are feeling ill and hopefully you will be feeling better soon. I sure know that being ill muddies my brain too!!!

Merry Christmas, where ever you are !

Excellent post Hodie. There has been alot of concern from pet owners we see in our clinic. There is an UNLICENSED vaccine on the market, we stock it now because alot of boarding kennels are requesting it. At present it is ONLY for use in dogs.I am still on the fence about whether or not to vaccinate my own pets, but as with anything you have to weigh the pros and cons. There is also the the H3N8 canine influenza, but that is a whole other thread, LOL.

****According to a newletter  from the AVMA, this is the list of infections of pets:

1) 2 Ferrets, one recovered, 1 deceased from illness

2)  7 Cats-  3 deceased, 4 recovered. They were from the following states- The first was diagnosed in November in Iowa, Utah, Oregon, Colorado, and Pennsylvania.

3)  1 Dog in New York

 Thanks hodie,

I've been living in Canada for long enough now that I flatter myself that I can almost pass for a native.  Not quite, though, and with the sinus headache clawing at me my sentence structure must have come unglued.

We're certainly in for a "White Christmas" here -- all the best of the season to you and yours as well! :)

Jackal,

You are NOT flattering yourself.   As Hodie says, "Your English is very, very good for it not being your native language. Sadly, it is far better than some here for whom English is their native language."     This would be funny, were it not so very true!!

What part of Canada are you in?

by hodie on 23 December 2009 - 01:12

mking,

I am curious as to who is manufacturing the vaccine you mention. Or, is it human vaccine being diverted? I had not heard of this. Are you seeing the H3N8 virus there where you live? I have had vet offices call me asking me if I am requiring the vaccine for canine influenza for boarding. To date, I am not because it does not seem to be a real problem and I hope that it stays that way.

I subscribe to ProMed, an emerging infectious disease listserve and they often post animal disease outbreaks. I have another one on several rabies outbreaks in the US involving pet dogs that I will post later.

Jackal, this storm we are starting to experience now is bolstered by cold Canadian air (thanks so much LOL) with pacific moisture and a low pressure area that is deepening. Once it gets going, by Wednesday and Thursday, the storm will stretch from middle New Mexico, near Albuquerque, up to the Canadian border. So we are all going to get it. I am already sick of winter and tomorrow and Thursday the wind chills will be well below zero here......UGH!!! I am not much for "white Christmas".....So are you a native Canadian and French speaker, or ?????? I have several Canadian friends and would love to visit Canada, fish in the Great Slave Lake (when it was warm) and see the area around Banff.

 Hi Mystere,

I'm in the west right by the Alberta BC border.  Beautiful country, when you're not buried in snow!

And hodie, we have so much cold air and snow that we just had to share!  (Seriously, when it's -46C with wind chill, it's *enough* already.)  I'm a European ex-pat, ethnic German, raised in Spain.  Canada is an *amazing* country, full of great people, wonderful wildlife, and stunning vistas.  I'm not so familiar with the east, but love the half I'm living in. I'm close enough to Banff that it makes no difference (provided you've got four wheel drive at the moment, the roads are *killer*).  If you come out this way be sure to take in Waterton Park too, and Lake Louise, and the Royal Tyrrell Museum if you like prehistory.  I've been here quite a while now, and I never get tired of what this country has to offer.
