Silbersee

by Silbersee on 22 December 2009 - 21:12

Sorry katesgillkennels, that you feel it is pathetic that tattoos are out! If you wish to complain, you can always send an email to the SV. It was decided that tattoos are out in the June 2009 delegates meeting, period! Also, maybe you should review the tone of your post?

Elkoor, I tattoo my puppies as well, have been doing that since I started breeding GSDs. But I do send my dogs to Germany as well and therefore need a Euro Avid Chip for the ones I keep. Luckily, I have the ability to get them through a vet in Germany. I have heard of chips wandering and also causing joint pain, even though it is extremely rare - just like tattoos causing hematomas, also rare. It never happened to us and we have tattooed hundreds (or more) puppies over the past decade or longer. Yes, some puppies bleed more than others but that will stop. The best thing to do is to keep these needles sharp. That causes a lot less pain. Dull ones are a problem. In Germany, with the new identification system, the SV would order a DNA sample if a dog has to be chipped again. Unlike over here, breeders have to submit a blood sample of the puppy at the same time the puppy is chipped - so not really a catastrophy if a chip is lost. That system truly does make tattooing obsolete in Germany. BTW, the SV is one of the last breed organizations to convert, others have done that years ago and used to call the SV's tattooing system antiquated.

Michael,
we have never ever had a problem with an ear not standing because of a tattoo - on the contrary, there have been breeders in Europe who believe in tattooing both ears (one without ink) to make sure they will stand and be stronger. Scar tissue helps ears. If somebody wants to make that claim I would doubt that. It is true that an erect ear will bleed more than tattooed, due to the blood flow, but that is superficial at best. Once the bleeding stops, the ear should be just fine.
One thing to remember is that after a certain age, a puppy/dog can only be tattooed under anasthesia, not just an ice pack! If you feel strongly against that, you can always opt for the abdominal tattoo. We would never do such a thing though because we do not believe in rolling our dogs over in front of everybody at every trial, breed survey or show!

katesquillkennels,You have posted twice on this thread and haven't said one thing in regard to the question I asked. You attack someone because of the way they chose to say something. If you have nothing constructive to contribute as far as helping me why do you bother to post.I thought this board was about helping fellow gsd owners with questions about various topics concerning the dogs.In the future if you don't care to share knowledge by replying to a direct question I ask I would appreciate it if you would allow others to do so without your interference, If not I will be sure to show you the respect you deserve on any post you make and in case you don't understand that would be zero. Silbersee,I also wondered about the abdominal tattoo, wouldn't that have to be done with a tattoo gun like the tattoo on a human. That would require that the dog be sadated wouldn't it ,or is there some other quick way this is accomplished that would be as fast as the ear tattoo.

DebiSue, I didn't mind you asking your question, as this was also something I was wondering about.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to all of you.               Michael

Thanks everyone for the info and opinions.

Melissa, thanks!  I saved the info from the link.

Chris, I was aware that Germany stopped tattooing but I am worried about being able to prove my dog is who she is at a trial.

Elkoor,  I may pay to let someone else (Vet) do it for me.  I don't necessarily want to put her out for it but I sure don't want to be involved.  I want to remain the good guy for my girl.

Michael, thanks for sharing your post with me.  Looks like we both have a lot to learn, eh?

katesqillkennels, you need to work on your people skills, really.  You don't have act like an ass just because you can.  I understand what you are trying to convey but there is no reason to be a jerk simply because you disagree with someone's opinion.

Katesquillkennels, Don't be ridiculous how could anyone intimidate anyone over the internet. All I'm saying to you is if you think about what Silbersee said it was meant in a different way then you took it and if I'm asking for help unless you want to respond to my question, whats the point in posting.Maybe your just having a bad day,I'll write it off as that anyway. I'll remove my head from my ass now so I can sincerely wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.     Michael

To be quite honest i wish i never said anything at all, i never post ! unfortunatly i was very anoyed at silbersee for what she /he said, how can any form of security for our dogs be OUT,total rubbish, its a deterant, how is any deterant OUT,microchips have been known to FADE,then what ?,maybes your dog will need to be identified by tattoo one day !!!
Everyone should tattoo !!! dog theft will go down,it should be done compulsory,it would help identifiying allsorts of problems from dog theft to the dangerous dog act,to helping identifying owners of cruelty cases, everyone over looks how important it really is,a chip on its own proves nothing, techknoledgy cannot prevent a chip fading,a tattoo is there for life.
Now ive said my peace,i wont ever post again,i never meant to come across as an arsehole , i feel very strong about  tattooing, maybes you will one day when you lose a dog,and all is left to identify it is an ear with no mark!!
                                                                                                                 Greetings to all

In my opinion, the more ID a dog has on it the better!  I tattoo all my puppies before sale and offer the chip as an extra, some purchasers have it done, some get their vets to do it, but I encourage it as most dog wardens will scan for a chip, but not necessarily look for a tattoo or even know how to read one.  The tattoo is only of any real use if it is a unique number registered on a publicised national database, which we are fortunate enough to have in UK.  For me, the advantage of the tattoo is the visible deterrent to dog thieves and the fact the Tattoo Registry have me on file as always willing to take back one of my dogs so they notify me if one is found, but not claimed.  Due to this I have, over the years, recovered 3 from dog pounds and several who I have either contacted the owner because I have extra contact information or been able to take the dog in until the owner is contacted.

Like all ID, if you are expecting it to help get your dog back if it strays, you must keep the contact details up to date, half the chipped dogs I get in my strays pound have out of date owner details.

I am with Margaret with this one. The more ID the better.

My puppies, in the rare occasion I do have them, don't leave without a chip with me as the irrevocable 2nd contact, and a tattoo. If nothing else the tattoo is a theft deterrant and very quick positive ID. I would never want any of mine dumped and would hope to be contacted by the rescue or shelter so that I could arrange transport back.

Just my opinion.

Melissa
