Hodie pretty well said what I was thinking....but I will add that Rimadyl has worked well for my dogs, young & old. They say it can be taken with or with out food, but I choose to give it after a meal, & I make sure that there is plenty of water available to my dogs when they are on it....not that there ever isn't, but keeping your dog well hydrated helps prevent some of the side effects. We have used Deramax after bloodwork to assess kidney function. Give with food and can use Pepcid to help protect stomach. Tramadol does not affect kidneys but does not have antiinflammatory effect of an nsaid. I have given both of these drugs in conjunction also.
Adequan injections helped alot ( generic less expensive). Glucosamine suppelements were also very effective but are not always so.
Hopefully you can find something to make those days as an oldster less painful.
