I use A Joint Compound Hokamix on the food every morning have done for years Not cheap in USA dollars it costs
$93 for 700grams, but it is a great product that along with Salmon Oil and a vitamin E tablet keeps them looking good and as Moons says a good regular brush that and a top brand Kibble, out door living is the way to go for me

Good food, daily exercise and coat maintenance. My dogs have shiny coats and receive no supplements whatsoever.
My dogs eat Acana (rotated between the Prairie and the Pacifica) supplemented with raw or dehydrated, we go a mile daily and they are gone over briefly with a stiff slicker every day or every other day.
I figure if they can't get it naturally, then it's not theirs to have. I don't like to overcomplicate with additions.

My idea is you can create the ideal feed for your dog by watching and figuring out what they are lacking and address that if you want a shinny coat you for sure need to start with good feed and add the supplements that help with coat needs i use and recommend that you call natures farmacy find there web site there phone number is on there call them and tell them what you want and they will take good care of you and your gsd they are very nice and know what they are talking about i have been using there stuff for almost 10 years now and could not be happier

Good genes help but I'll agree totally with Steve that outdoor living is an essential.

O'l Nelson gets two good walks a day, 4/5 miles or so bouncing round a field, every day in all weathers, rain, sleet, sun, wind snow, cold etc. He gets a rub down with a towel if he's wet, which at the moment is every time we go out, and a weekly groom & polish with nothing more than a standard brush and a household duster. In 3 years we've never bathed him either as swimming in the river takes care of that.

Although he's not kennelled outside, when he's left in the house during the day (& night) we leave a couple of windows open and never leave the central heating on. Another thing I think doesn't help is carpets. Combine these with the dry heat of central heating and it just makes you want to scratch thinking about it.

We have bare floorboards and prefer to use a wood buring stove and the dog will grab a bit of heat in front of the fire but more often than not will lie away from it on on the bare floor. He's perfectly happy and has a great coat which seems to get better when the weather gets worse.

Let the coat be a coat & the dog be a dog.

I see a lot of people use Grizzly Salmon Oil so I just thought I would share a price I found after researching. I found 320z. pump for $29.69 delivered to my door so if that is a good price just email and I will share. I don't want to offend anybody I just have plenty of time to research things and find the best price so I thought I would share.

You can actually find the yummy chummies in some larger pet stores now.  They also make a salmon oil that we've used for quite a while.  All the salmon is wild-caught Alaska salmon, so no worries about the antibiotics that farmed salmon are given.  I use the treats for tracking because the smell of hot dogs makes me ill.
