I knew that's what you meant VomMarischal, no offense taken .  The link was interesting and I will read more in depth later tonight.

My brain is in overdrive today, I didn't see where the OP thought you implied a cross.  I thought you were referring to my post, DUH.

Your puppy is going thru "normal" puppy coat changes.......nothing to worry about.
In a couple of months, you'll look back at this post and laugh!     Also, be prepared, his coat will change a few more times, and the colors will change too!  LOVE the baby raccoon look!
Best of luck to you!

My puppy had that same thing when she was younger. It's now completely gone.

Here's the one on Greylin's tail. I think he's about 12-16 months, in that range. Hard to see it because the bugger won't hold still, but it's got that funny whitish dot in the middle. Weird, no? GSD puppies seem to display that wolf feature.

I do like that name, Greylin.  Very fitting!

We had an accidental litter many, many years ago.  My granddad's orange border collie bitch mated with my uncles black & silver GSD and every single pup in that litter of 12 had the black mark on its tail.  Even the white one.  We always figured it came from the GSD.  My black & tan has a tan ring around her tail.  I used to worry about it until I noticed it on others.

Every sable pup I ever had has that same marking on it ..The german bloodlines of mine all have it....always have since I started breeding....every one has it...some stay longer than others...

It is perfectly expected and normal..Look at the tail on my sable pup which is  Tripl H Cola  when she was 10 weeks old and she turned out very dark grey sable...she is on the right in the pic..look at the black grey marking on her tail  . Her sister has it also. but can't be seen in this pic..
