My own death would be about it for me. A dog is a lifelong commitment, end of story. When I moved cross-country I had a hard time finding a place that did not freak out over Pit Bulls. I have a three year old American Pit Bull Terrier that is such a lovely dog. He is the least of anyone's worries and I refuse to give him up for any reason, what so ever. Someone wants to ban his breed and take him away, well you can try but I can't guarantee you will leave with all the limbs you came back with and the Pittie would have had nothing to do with it. ;)

My dogs aren't going anywhere, unless I die suddenly.

Prager:

How about looking at it this way, If your dealing with so many returns and problem customers why don,t you stop making so many pups? it,s a valid question with valid reasoning. I hear from so may breeders telling horror stories of how pups get treated abbandonded, abused, problems with aggresion issues but how much time does the breeder spend educating buyers staying in touch and helpeing with training issues? actually making buyers understand what there buying and what realistic handling this animal is going to take to be properly responsive? .

I'm not getting rid of my dogs, period. No way.

Ronnie,

Err ... I assume you mean when they die they will be buried "with" you, not when YOU die? I hope ...

My dogs are members of my family.  I'd go without eating before my dogs ever would.

4Pack:  My dogs aren't going anywhere, unless I die suddenly.

Actually, I have planned for that event.  I have a living will and my dogs are cared for in the event of my untimely death, occupational hazard.  I have even left a sizeable amount of money to care for my dogs for a long long time.  I think we put 50k aside for the person caring for our dogs.  I want my little guys treated well.

Jim, I am glad I am not the only one that has done that. I did it and my family members called me "fanatical" and "obsessed". To that my answer was simply "Maybe if more people were "fanatical" and "obsessed" we'd have less issues in the world" They shut up fast. ;)

Interesting thread.

A variation on the same question. How much would you be willing to spend on vet/medical bills on your dog? A couple brought this up recently. One of them had a colleague whose dog developed cancer and they literally went into debt for over $10K to treat her. Then it was necessary to spend an additional $5K to continue the treatment and at this point they decided to have her PTS.

I was asked how much I'd be willing to spend and I said I really did not know the answer to that question. I'd have to cross that bridge as and when it occurs. I am sure others have had to confront the issue.

Gwalt,
Well, my dogs aren't going to any family members.  My male would be  a challenge for a new handler, but I have a buddy in my K9 unit who has agreed to take him.  I have also agreed to take his crazy Mali should anything happen to him.  That would be more of a challenge for me.  I never mentioned money to my buddy, thought it would be a nice suprise at a bad time.
