I've given my husband the 3rd degree.  He didn't like it much, but knew quickly I wasn't messing around.  If ANYTHING ever happened to Zack I'd be devastated and I would blame myself and NOT the dog.  Zack is a very smart "little" guy and I believe he now knows not to go wondering off w/out "Mom."  It's been about a month and we've had no issues.  He (Zack) picks up on things VERY quickly and is VERY in tune with what keeps "Momma" happy.  He's a HUGE Momma's boy, usually never more than a step away from me.

Dogs do NOT know not to go wandering off, especially a male that is still intact. They have to be taught and reinforced, again and again! AND.... they do not learn it in one lesson. It takes ALOT of time. There are  SOOOOO many things that are especially appealing to a dog. Rabbits, Squirrels ( to chase) a bitch in heat, to do what comes naturally.
All it takes is one time.. and if you are not quick enough, you will have a DEAD DOG!
GOOD LUCK.. your going to need it!

"Good luck... you're going to need it?" What the?????
Well then, I guess I should say there have been SEVERAL instances when he has "attempted" to run off and been stopped dead in his tracks.  Do you seem to think I'm some kind of happless owner that pays absolutely no attention to my dogs?
I now remember why I don't come to this board and ask questions anymore.....
