Beautiful photos everyone, thanks. Pretty cool how the color/pattern develops on sables.

Not having a stripe isn't somthing to worry about. I have had a few pups with no stripes and some of them have turned out darker then the ones that did. Each sable is different and they change so much as they grow and as the seaseon changes.
Here are some pics of my girl Dakota.
This is a pic of the litter Dakota came out of. The one with the collar is Dakota.

Here you can see Dakota with her stripe while her siblings( for the lack of a better way t say it) are are all ready sabled out

A nice face shot of her

Then we have her here at about 3/4 months.

And here as an adult( picture is a bit washed out)

And here are a couple of pics of one of her most recent pups as a young pup and a yound adult.

So do Sables tend to get darker as they get older?

by RacingQH on 30 August 2009 - 01:08
Char G,
Sables are dark when born, (Not all the same shade obviously.) then they lighten up, For instance they are lighter at 8 weeks than they were at birth. Once their adult coat starts coming in they darken up again. My 17 month old seems to change colors monthly. Their summer and winter coats can also be different from each other color wise.

Delilah,
Just curious what the temperment is of the last Sable in your last post? She's 8 months in that photo?

She is a puppy I sold. So I dont know her current temperment. But when she was here she was just like every other puppy verry playful, loving and she liked to play tug-o-war, had good drive. And if i remember right she was 8 months in that picture. The customor complined that people didnt think she was a GSD, to wolf like or somthing her friends alsodtold her somthing to the same effect. She also said that the dog was too small. Dakota isn't a huge shepherd she weighd in at around 65lbs and the sire of the pup is Ruger about 65-70lbs.
She had called AKC and everthing. Then she wanted to pull a DNA, I told her she could on her own dime. And if it came out that the sire and or dam wasnt who I said it was I would refund all her money. She never did do the DNA test.

I'm just asking because I've heard that dogs with a dark coat color, eyes should be brown. And if the dog with a dark coat color eyes are yellow then there is something a little off. I've seen a few dogs that eyes should be brown ( coat is dark but eyes are yellow) and every dog exhibited not a very desirable temperment. Does anyone else know of this or has come across this?
by Delilah on 30 August 2009 - 02:08
More then likely the reason the pup has golden eyes is because she has white in her background. Thats what I always been told. And im my personal experience its been true that my colored dogs that have white in their background come out with light eyes. This isn't true with all my ones with white in their background. Some do have dark eyes. But the ones with light eyes I have had did have white in their background. And I also find that my ones with the gold eyes also carried for sable.
My white Nash had gold eyes and threw sables. As did my black and tan Sky. Sky came out of a black and tan female and my boy Rock who is a black and tan with gold eyes. His mother was a white with dark brown eyes. We never got a sable out of her just blacks, black and tans and whites(only when bred to white).
And I have had many dark dogs with bright eyes and they have been just fine. To me it sounds like an old wives tails like the black spotted toungs = bad dogs or a black roof = a mean dog.
