Onyxgirl,
6 months is still very young, and the pup has a rather short attention span. At this age he shouldn't view the helper as a threat. The helper is the one who initiates the game and the rag or tug is the "rabbit." The male I have now was a complete dud until about 5 1/2 months then he really got into it. I expected more from him as a younger dog and was getting disappointed. Then all of a sudden, holy cow, everything I wanted was there and more. Some pups can take time to mature and GSD's are slow maturing dogs to begin with. Some pups go crazy the first day and some take a little while to get going their all different.
I would keep at the protection work and not worry about it, it will come as he understands. I would keep him separated from the other dogs and allow some supervised play time with them, but that's me.
