ViperK9,

What formula are you feeding and were are you getting it for $42?

I been looking around Utah and the lowest I found it was $58 for a 28.6 pound bag of the Red Meat formula and $55 for the Poultry Formula.

We are feeding the chicken formula now but rotate every few months between the chicken and the red meat which is a few dollars more.  We are located in northern IL.

SitasMom,

I have been feeding the prairie formula.  My dogs haven't really been keeping weight on either.

My dogs work and play all day everyday.  They don't just sit in a kennel or in the house.  The only time they are in their dog runs is when my wife and I are at work.  We train about 2-4 hours a day.  Mostly because I am working at a kennel and like to work my dogs between all the others.  I am training one to narcotic detection and the other in Schutzhund.

Mew,

TOTW stands for Tast of the Wild and EVO is a brand of dog food made by Innova.  You can check them out at:

If they are loosing weight,  you may need a dog food with more carbs, not more protien.

Carbs give them fuel to do their work, protien gives them what they need to rebuild muscle.

Marathon runners eat pasta.......and not so much steak........

SitasMom,
Dogs are not humans and humans are not dogs.

The dog's metabolism is very proficient at hydrolizing glycogen from protein sources, so large amounts of carbohydrates are not required in the diet.
A diet high in carbs for dogs (and cats) can lead to obesity.
This is why many dogs and cats are overweight in this country. They are eating cheaply made foods that use plant sources as a poor substitute for protein and have to try to metabolize all the extra un-needed carbohydrates that come with it.

I made a post awhile back 2-3 weeks ago about Evo. I have fed Evo Chicken base for over three
years. Evo for some reason decided to change the size of the kibble. Making it 2-3 times
larger. And I think changed the formula. When I fed the larger size My boy immediately got
severe poops just like I changed brands cold turkey. That was 3-4 weeks ago. Since then
it has proggressed back to near normal.
I will add this He is in the best of condition I have had some ask how I get such a shiny coat.
I only feed a level cup A.M-P.M. He is very active as We train and walk several times during
the day. I still am not completely sold on Evo.
The thing that scares Me about TOTW is that Diamond makes this food and We all know
about diamond changing up the formula in different brands.

IMO
This dog could use more carbs - and now have to worry about getting fat.........it is active and needs that instant energy........more protein won't do the trick........

SitasMom,

My dogs do rest.  A lot.  They are total couch patotoes when they are in the house.  The only exercise they do get is  the training and when we are outside just playing with them.  Rest of the time they are laying around in the house.

I'm just looking for food that will make them feel better and look better.  Their coats have been really dull and they haven't really seemed that energetic like they were before.  Plus, they've been having really loose stools the last 3 bags of food so about 1 1/2 months.  I just want them to feel good and be like they were before the formula seemed to change.
