"I am just wondering how the dog will still go out without the toy hanging?"

The ball is always  there except in the trial.

I would like to hear more about the ball hanging too!!
Are you using a second ball to reward for the down after they get the 1st one for the send out?
I know with the target method you are always in control of the reward, just chaining the events together.

Here is a pretty clear explanation of one ball hanging method:

Keep in mind everyone will tweek things this way and that to fit themselves and the dog they are working with, so probably there are many variations of  this particular method as there are completely different ways teach the send out!

to my dog the toy is always out there.  i put it there before i take the field.  my dog doesnt see it there.  in the start, i have to show him it is there.  over time, he just comes to know that it is always there.    i use a dark colored ball that hangs on a black rod at the end of the field.  it is hardly visible to me or him.  sometimes i send him from a short distance, others longer.  all he knows is that when he goes far enough a toy will appear and it is his.

there are other little things i do also, but i am better at showing them than trying to explain them.
