I work in a major hospital microbiology/virology lab. I'm not in panic mode (and I handle pathogenic microorganisms on a daily basis). The news that we in the lab have been getting from the CDC and Illinois Dept of Public Health is fairly consistent with what has been on the news. Our biggest problem right now is work load. Everyone that has a sniffle is showing up to be tested for swine flu. Looks like I'm going to be getting some overtime.

Closing schools is not really a bad idea.   Kids spred germs very quickly in schools, take it home to mom and dad.

Sick people are afraid half the time to call in sick.   Another good idea, stay home if you are sick.

Panic helps no one, a little common sense and good hygene goes a long way.

Stop kissing every stranger you meet in crowded bars...  use protection at all times..

Don't go barefoot in public.

And stay out of chatrooms.

I just got this email from a friend of mine whose co-worker went to the
doctor today: "The secretary in my office spoke to her mother's
doctor this morning. He told her the following and urged her to pass
this on to everyone she knows. She said this doctor is not normally the
alarmist type but was very adamant about this. He is a doctor at East
Jefferson Hospital, he said the following: There have been 65 cases of
Swine Flu in the New Orleans area in the past 48 hours. This is not yet
public knowledge because Nagin doesn't want to hurt Jazz Fest. The
boats that are docking and coming in from Mexico could be the culprits,
but no one knows yet. His instructions are as follows: For the next 10
days (he said by then we will all know about this) do not use public
restrooms! Stay away from large crowds and anyplace with low income
workers, he specifically said Wal-Mart. He said this should be taken
very seriously because since we are not being made aware of it, it could
literally spread here like wildfire. He recommended buying Lysol wipes
and wiping down anything you have to use that can be accessed by the
public. He also contacted his child's school and recommended they
cancel the school play. This came directly from the doctors mouth!"

How boring to die of the flu. Not nearly as dramatic as being run over by a bus saving a child from a would-be molester, or crushed in an earthquake-induced bridge collapse freeing people from wreckage?
Dead either way, but boring as hell dying from the flu.

Shaking hands more infectious than sharing a festive kiss: Report

Washington, December 20 (ANI): People may be far more at the risk of passing on an infection by shaking someones hand than in sharing a kiss, according to a report.

Compiled by a group of hygiene experts from the United States and the UK, this is the first detailed report on hand hygiene in the home and community, rather than in hospital and healthcare settings.

(I think it has something to do with the natural germicides in our mouths or something...)

I think Moon's kissing warning might be of the passionate, french style, rather than the cheeky greeting type.

CDC officials were asked Friday how the H1N1 virus measures up to the deadly virus that sparked the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

"What we have found by looking very carefully at the sequences of the new H1N1 virus is that we do not see the markers for virulence that were seen in the 1918 virus," said Nancy Cox, chief of the CDC's Influenza Division.

However, she added, "we know there's a great deal that we do not yet understand about the virulence of the 1918 virus or other influenza viruses that have a more severe clinical picture in humans." Video Go behind the scenes at the CDC »

As researchers work, the mayor of Mexico City expressed optimism Friday.

Authorities in Mexico are "beginning to see evidence that the (virus) might be letting up, and the number of people who have been hospitalized has leveled out in regards to people who are contagious, at least as of yesterday," Mayor Marcelo Ebrard told reporters.

"I do not say this so that we lower our guard or so that we think that we do not have a problem anymore," he said.

"We do have a problem, but I say this so that we know where we are as a city after we have done all we have done, and in what direction we are heading and how much we have progressed. And what I can say is that we are heading in the right direction. (from CNN)

Just keep washing your hands, folks, pass on the trip to Mexico for a bit, and I think we'll survive this one. Of course, w

And, on dying an unglorified death; My fear of an obscure death:

I would hate my obit to say, "she died crossing the street when hit by a car while some distracted teen was texting."
