Sept 21, 07, Beckett, then an over enthusiastic but very large puppy, jumped off my deck/porch to greet my daughter, launching me, on the other end of the leash, 6' into the air....I landed about 8 or 9 ' away from the porch, half in the dog's kiddie pool, completely tearing all the tendons & ligaments in my right shoulder. Beckett turned around, came back to me wimpering. Complete reconstruction of my right shoulder & 4 months later, I could finally function again. This past January, I slipped on ice trying to get to my car to go to work, blew out my right knee, had to have a total knee replacement March 12. I'm at the point where I can walk unassisted, but when I was really gimpy, good ol' Beckett, now a very masculine 2.5 year old, decided he was my protector. Normally we fuss on the left....he wouldn't leave my right side, even placing his body between my knee & objects blowing along in the wind. Couldn't budge him. He would take a long sniff of my knee & that was it, he would glue himself to my side. He absolutely knew something was wrong. And when the incision began to heal, & I got promoted to walking with a cane, he went back to fuss-ing on the left, like before, & back to being a goofball. Every once in a while, tho' --he'll sniff the knee, & sit down next to it, & throw his head back over his shoulder & look at me, for all the world like he's checking on me, & it's usually when it's been hurting, too. jh

Happyday I trained through it, mostly because I figured it was muscle cramping due to the shifting of usage. I realized after I posted to you that I was also trapped in a fiberglass cast from my toes to my knee but since you are able to take your's off at night some gentle rubbing might help ease the aches.
I also upped my potassium intake, basically stuff I would do if I was having normal cramping in my legs and tried to stretch my toes as much as possible.
As I said, within a week to 10 days it went away but there were times I almost called the doctor to ask about it. Except I knew if I did he'd just tell me it was my own damn fault for insisting upon walking on the leg in the first place.

Kal.... Talking about your dog sniffing your injury - my puppy does the same thing..... you have to wonder - is this a sign of a therapy dog in the making? Miramom what you think? Now I do Schutzhund - so my male that is sniffing my foot is high drive - and not for people with medical problems - though for one small moment- he seemed to care about me... just one moment - the next one- he grabbed my hand and brought blood..... I wouldnt have expected anything else out of a 3 month old...
I have used the advise - on the heel to toe - and i have to say- the back of my leg is feeling a little better.... I will try to train my dog tomorrow... we will see...,.
