Hi Vikram,

I believe both parents need to have the black gene within the first three generations to get some black pups,

I bred my girl Dana to a solid black stud in the hopes of having an all black female, mind you Dana has an all black sister,
well out of 13 pups, all were black & reds, so I have to come to the conclusion that Dana has not inherited the black gene:

I think Mirasmom is right.  From my reading about color, pure black, like pure whitein a GSD, is a result of the recessive black color genes and both parents must carry it.  I think the white alleles are "e" and the black is "a".  To have a solid black or solid white, you need to have a double "ee" or double "aa" - for a black dog.

Vikram, it might be possible to narrow it down if you could say the colours of the grandparents.  Otherwise, sable is the dominant so very likely this is the colour of most of the puppies BUT it's not correct to say you will definitely get any proportion of sables at all. It all depends on how the genes segregate.  Assuming the dam is heterozygous sable, it's more accurate to say each pup born has a 50% chance of being sable, so it is possible that you end up with no sables at all.  The rest of the litter, as others  have already said, depends on recessives carried, which could be determined from the colours of the grandparents.
