"Another place dogs can be off leash, only if under voice control, are our national forests. Its a much safer place to let the dogs run and play. Unfortunately national forests are few and far between and usually take hours to get to. "

I am extremely lucky to have a national forest just on the other side of the closest neighbor's house.

Most of the dogs I see in the city park as I drive by are on leash, but I also sometimes see folks playing frisbee with their dogs or otherwise off leash (but under control).  But most folks keep their dogs on leash because the street goes right through the park, and there are ducks and wild turkeys and deer, so you want to keep your dog under control.  I've never seen a dog fight there, or a dog chasing any other animal either.  I haven't been there with my dog, but I drive through there several times a day, it's on the way to work.  You have to stop for turkeys crossing the road.  :)

In quite a few of Parks in the UK there is a secure fenced section that is a Childrens' Playground. This is good, because the area will be certain to be free from any unwanted mess. Especially Owners who ignore clean up signs. Parents and children can relax and enjoy the facilities without any fear of dog interaction. The rest of the Park is free for everyone to enjoy (hopefully consideratly). Regards, Vixen

As has been mentioned, dog parks are where you take your healthy dog to get sick, your well behaved dog to learn bad manners and a place where you can go and learn much patience with people that feel it is a dogs God given right to gather in social circles with their own kind.  If you expect any obedience from your dog than you can learn from those present how wrong you are for correcting your dog and making them obey you.  Kinda like putting a bunch of kintergarten kids in one big room and leaving them alone for an hour.

In my opinion the biggest problem in the dog parks are the humans.  They sit and drink their coffee and ignore their dogs.
Having said that when I living in NYC it was the only place my former GSD could get a good run in of course I would have to go when no when elese was there or I was would guard the gate and say he bites and is dog agressive so please give me 20 (and most people would ).
There are some in the NYC that you pay a little dues and they keep them extra clean etc....as they are left to the parks services.

One of the major reasons I left the city not always a fun place for a GSD because not alone of places to run.
But we walked and walked and walked and he was super socialized although I would hear his jaws snapping if joggers got tooo close.

If it is your only choice use it wisely otherwise avoid.
JUST MY OPINION have seen many fights people forgetting to take pinches off and then the dogs get stuck by the pinches nice! You wanna put your hand in there???

Happy Monday everyone!

Back to work!

No Bob, it's a place where you can leave your dog while you do other things. It's like a car park.

Some do but the really good ones have what’s really needed at the dog park….a veterinarian.  He is often needed to patch up the dogs after the dogfights and diseases your dog will pick up at the dog park.
