The whole idea of a dog that protects you is a curious one.

Under some circumstances your GSD can protect you, but often it is the other way around.

This may be a dumb question, but I am just curious- how do you break your dogs? I work mine throughout the day, sometimes we go for a run at night (when I am motivated enough lol) and play often. But you say never let them out unsupervised- i think this would drive me crazy. I always let mine out in the fenced backyard at night before bed to burn off some energy and then in the morning while i shower, get ready etc. and sometimes throughout the day. Like I'll work with one and let the others run. I never leave the house when they are outside, but I do work inside and leave them out sometimes. i do worry about it sometimes, as I don't necessarily trust all of my neighbors (no specific reasons, they just don't win the nicest people award), but how do you manage never letting them out alone?

You dont.
You live life and take your chances.
Do what you can when you can but you can't be all things in all places.
