With a DSLR, or even a film SLR, your lens is what will make it possible for you to get action shots, from far away.  If you have the choice, put more money into your lenses than in your camera body.  As long as your camera body has a manual setting and settings that let you control shutter speed, aperture, etc., it should be more than adequate.  What you don't want is a "point and shoot" camera that makes all the decisions without your input.

FWIW, the new Nikon D90 is very attractive, as it will record video, eliminating the need for a camcorder.  Those people looking for a really good telephoto lens, look for an f2.8 lens as opposed to an f3.5-5.6 lens, as you'll be able to use faster shutter speeds even as you lose daylight.  You will also be able to get your subject in sharp focus, blurring out a possibly busy, distracting background.

I've been researching this for awhile as I am in the market for a dslr camera. The Canon 40D is good for sporting events as it shoots 6+ frames per second and the body is around 800 bucks, with a lot of lenses to choose from, however the Nikon D90 has video capability, and lots of lenses and is more than capable. Check out this site http://www.dpreview.com/
There's a lot of good info there.

I have used nikons and my wish camera is a nikon d 90 with several lens. my nikons are film based and you will not go wrong with the d60 or above in a slr 10-14 mega pixel. check out consumer reports for recommendations.right now I use the fuli film E 900  consumer reports rates the nikon D90 tops but body only is 800.00. and you could get a good lens for a few dollars over your 1Kbudget

You can buy the most expensive camera thats on the market right now and still wouldnt capture that dream photo that you desire. You need to be lucky to get that capture.

Great pics Brittany. I have a Cannon  EOS450d but I am still in the process of trying to master the camera. The photos you took, were they on the automatic setting or did you put your own settings in. For some reason my motion photos aren't as sharp as I would like them to be. Your photos are brilliant, lovely and clear.
