I don't do Ring w/my dog, but my large GSD could EASILY clear an 8' wall...probably 10. Actually, he has done the wall at my friend's Ring field. IMO, that shouldn't really be a bid deal if a dog's structure is correct and he/she is sound. We shouldn't expect so little!

Some dogs excell in it, but not all. Biggest problem that I see is super overwieght dogs on the Palisade, but mine do well on the hurdles and long jumps, but she has the will and drive to do it! I dont know of too many breeders that dogs do, but some of Julies DDR lines in the NW do. Most working lines are very capable though, but show lines? I have not seen any yet, but I have only been into it for 2 years now. I have a cross lined female, but her show side really does prevent her from having the correct drives to do so. She is just a pet now.

Dog's are out showline or out of workingline weather one is working dog it's totaly different story. There are still SL breeders that breed sound dog's is just you won't see their dog's going VA or being bread to most of the VA dog's.

I would like to get a nice gsd that will be capable to do french ring. Im tired of people dissing the gsd breed as a poor worker compared to the mali and dutchie. I would like to see more gsd competing in that sport than see the mali all the time. They just have too much energy and non -stop. Hell sometimes I would like to prove people wrong about the gsd where I live at. I thought gsd would be able to climb the 8 foot wall anyways because don't the k9 unit dogs have to be able to climb a high wall or fence to catch a suspect?
Jenni78 is your gsd black? and aren't you located in naperville? if so whats the new website?

July9000, french ring is a sport. I was told the hardest sport of all...supposely.
gsd excel in shutzhund
malinois excel in french or mondio ring
dutchies excel in knpv (not sure if that is considered a sport its used to test police k9 in holland i believe)
You should research it very intense sport I might say so myself.

I know of a few gsds that were worked in Ring in the PNW. They were essentially of "hodgepodge" ( mixture of Czech. German. American) lines, as I recall. All of them were nervy dogs that simply could not compete in schutzhund, due to thin nerves and very shallow grips. The grips were not such an issue in Ring. I recall a couple had issues with the barrage, but were worked through it. They did not, as I recall, have a problem with the gunshots, while biting. Food refusal was also a problem, I think because they had been tracked for years in some cases with hotdogs and here were people tossing pieces of wienies at them :-)
I know that there are several sch-trained and/or titled dogs that have gotten brevets.

RDH...I have 2 black GSDs, but I don't have a website. I used to live in Naperville. I agree they should be able to. Mine regularly flies over my 6' fence, so climbing an 8' wall isn't terribly hard for him. My female can jump straight up onto an almost 5' high dog house, with her BACK feet landing first. Breed for proper structure and solid temperament, and you shouldn't be so shocked when the dogs aren't worthless couch potatoes.
ZVZW, I think "some of Julie's lines do" is a bit of an exaggeration...while it's great that someone is actually doing something w/a dog from her, is he titled in FR yet? Not to sell him short, personally, but ONE dog is in TRAINING for FR doesn't exactly constitute "some of her lines" excelling in FR. JMO. Overall, I think the body structure of a Mal is more suited, but sure, there are GSDs who can do it.
