the dog ivermectin is dosed per the dogs' weight.  It is safe.  Check out the daily wormer, might be cheaper in the long run - or consider dosing all year round, if you do that you don't have to do the yearly heartworm check at the vet which will save more money.  There are also some products that are cheaper than others - ask vet about any generic brands (don't know of any but doesn't hurt to ask) or maybe heartguard is cheaper than interceptor - or ask the vet about the correct dose of cattle ivermectin FOR DOGS..

My vet has given me the correct dosage for treatment of heartworms, followed every 4 months with Safeguard  Goat wormer, bought at the same feedstore you get your Ivemectin in. Goat wormer is Panacur and one big difference is the outragious price of what a vet charges..

My vet was indignent when I asked...............He could see $$ not going into his pocket. Guess I'll have to find another vet that's willing to understand that not everyone can afford such prices.

yes, find another vet who is willing to help you as his client, instead of one that is only interested in his pocketbook.

BTW the panacur works great, all dogs are worm free, will have to give another dose in a month........

Is there a more affordable way to keep fleas and ticks of the dogs?

never used the paste.  under the advice and guidence of my vet ( who also teaches at a vet school)  i use the liquid,   .1% , 1cc per 40 lbs.   unlike the pills or chews you get from a vet, it is easier to get the correct dosage.

for instance, heartgard for 51-100 lbs dog.   dosage would probably be set for a 75 lb dog.   50lb dog too much, 100 lb dog too little.

also can be used for treating ear mites.

does the liquid come in different strenghts?

if so, one would have to be careful

by Luvmidog on 01 March 2009 - 20:03

No it is the same in the brown bottle at the Feed store.   You use what you are told . YOu measure it from the syrnge, drawn from the bottle..

It is a 1% solution.  Take note    Do not use the bottle that says   IVemectic  PLUS.

Why the heck is heartworm medicine for dogs so expensive?? SitasMom is right, it means heartworm prevention goes out the window when owners are financially strapped. I used to have two Great Danes. They were too big for the biggest dose of Heartgard, so I had to buy TWO packages for each dog. I just looked at the prices for horse Ivermectrin and I'm pissed!!!! I was about to pick up a new package of Revolution this week, but this sounds like a good alternative. Can liquid Ivermectrin be purchased without a prescription?

by Luvmidog on 01 March 2009 - 21:03

YES, you buy it at Tractor Supply or your local feedstore.

I wouldn't use Revolution if it were the last on the earth. Have my own opinion , plus many of my vet friends who agree.

Too many chemicals to do so many things . Think about it . They claim  ears, ticks, heart and fleas , etc..My gosh, think about the chemical you are putting in a dogs liver that has to do all that.

Never used any of these preventative to the extent they prescribe, but that is my own person belief. Never had worms, or any parasites either.

I give my horse garlic and my dogs also in their food.

Come on folks stop with the what if horror stories. 1 notch is 1 notch of zimectrin, ivermectin paste wormer. 1 notch for 10-50 pounds, 2 notches 51-100 pounds and so on. No problems in over 20 years. Been using it for over 20 years, never had a case of heart worms. Know several people who dose injectable orally and have had heart worms. Injectable is to be injected not shot in the mouth or put in a piece of food. Ivomec liquid did come in different strengths. There was a dose for swine/hogs, a dose for sheep and one for cattle. Injectable shot in the mouth you can loose and waste it by the dog coughing or spitting it out and so on. With paste, If coughed or spit out you can see it. Then just redo in a day or two. Been giving ivermectin paste wormer to puppies all he way up to senior canines for years. The paste has always been more convenient then the injectable so has always been preferred. I live in year round mosquito territory too. Over 20 years heartworm free too. 2 - 3 tubes a month depending on current canine population. Heart worm free over 20 years.

Now with Zimectrin gold (includes droncit) droncit kills tapeworms, the ivermectrin products do not kill tapeworms, Zimectrin gold does kill tapes, because of the droncit included in it, all new dogs and puppies are  treated with Zimectrin gold for a few months.

I use bio spot for fleas if a new dog or pup has them  after a good bath and intense brushing and combing.
