There are plenty of nice dogs here in the USA..  And never buy a dog sight unseen as it is best to visit the kennel and see the conditions the dogs are raised in.  You want to find a breeder you can trust and that will take some time.  Do not be in a hurry.  You might even have to get on a waiting list for a puppy, as many good breeders in the US only breed occasionally.

I doubt if you would find any dogs abroad that are carrying bloodlines significantly different to what is already available in US, the world of dog breeders is a lot smaller than it was.  Maybe not just up the road, but at least in the same country and within travelling distance so you can see what you are getting.  Europe has proportionally just as many average dogs and kennel blind breeders as anywhere else.

Hello,
many pointed out, that buying a Puppy unseen is a risky thing, agreed. Also many pointed out that, if you ad the shipping costs for getting the pup from Europe to the US, would make the pup more expensive than buying in the US. Well, I just send one of my pups to Washington, DC. The total cost for the buyer, was not even 1800$. This for a VA sired pup with a pretty good pedigree. If I now look at puppy prices in the US, for a pup out of equal breeding, I guess 1800$ would not be enough. Plus you might not find that pup in driving distance, so there would be also shipping costs involved.

But what I really like is, that you gsds4fun, take your time to make a decision and research what you are looking for. This is the way to go and will most likely prevent you from beeing dissapointed at the end. Way to go.

Yvette, yes there are dishonest peopel/breeders in Germany, just as there dishonest peopel/breeders in the US. The way you put it, one can assume that German breeders are just waiting to ripp you off ! I would bet some money on it, that there were more deals done to the satisfaction of the buyer, than the other way around. But I do agree with you, it is always better to see a Pup in person, before one makes a decission. Sometimes one might just not find a certain bloodline, and if he does it might be overseas or at the other end of the US continent - that is were one will have to devellop trust. I perfectly understand that this is not easy - but it is not a one-way-street, I as a breeder will also have to trust you,as the buyer, that you will take good care of my pup, as this is of ,at least for me,  great importance to me.

Oh, one more thing - not every dog will be VA, all of us have certain hopes for our dogs, seeing in a pup something that we esspecially like, and yet after 1-2 years turns out not to be as great as we had wished. But that is something that we all, breeders and buyers encounter. But you increase your odds, when you decide to go with a breeder and with dogs/pups out of respected bloodlines, to have in the end, a healthy & stable GSD.

Nice thread, and it is still civilized........ good to see that that can happen too.

For a showline pup, I say check out Bullinger Shepherds. You will find some of the best showline pedigrees, an honest person, quick easy transition of dog, papers, etc., and most important, a very well grounded dog.

Your going to pay a little more than some US breeders, but, In this case, YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!! And, ALL pups come fully guaranteed!

I agree about the weak American dollar making it impractical to import at this time. I would also not import a pup unless I was going through someone I knew well and trusted.

It would be nice to see more American buyers seeking out show prospects from American breeders. Look at the top 5 in most Seiger show classes, the dogs/puppies are usually imports or bred and owned by very top kennels. It is difficult for small, lesser known, American kennels to get their dogs "out there". Most of us sell our puppies into pet homes, even very high quality ones.   I have always said with the size of our country and resources we have in America, we should have more dogs of the same quality produced in Germany. What holds us back is the lack of breeders here to work together.  Sorry, off on a tangent.

Either way- if you can find what you want stateside, it sure is nice to show support for American breeders. Lord knows our economy needs our money to stay here!

Liz:

I imported an Amulree Showline puppy from Fiona Anderson in Belgium.  My friend also imported one around the same time.  I highly recommend dealing with her.  She arranged flight directly into philadelphia for me, kept me informed and called in the middle of the night her time to check that everything was ok with the pup and that she was home and doing well.

Great looking dog and wonderful temperment.  Molly turned out to be exactly what Fiona described to me.

I would recommend buying a dog from her and hope to buy another for myself in the future.
