HB 451 (Mandatory Spay/Neuter) is scheduled to be heard in the Agricultural Committee on Tuesday 3/24 at 8:00 am. If you can possibly get to Tallahassee, please attend the meeting. We need a stong show of opposition. If you can't attend, please call the legislators below and express your strong opposition to this bill. Also send an email using the mailing list at the bottom of this page. You can copy and paste the list from the page directly into your email. Some talking points you can use are:
- Spay/neuter surgery is a decision best left to pet owners and their veterinarians.
- Mandatory spay/neuter has not worked in areas where it has been tried.
- Surrenders to shelters may increase as people who cannot afford the surgery will turn in their animals rather than pay the vet bill.
- Registrations and compliance with Rabies vaccination may be reduced due to people not wanting to be caught with intact animals.
- The perceived pet overpopulation problem may be more of a pet retention and shelter distribution problem. Shelters in Florida are receiving pets from other areas of the country. If we are having a pet overpopulation problem, why are we bringing in animals from other states? Additional public education and a nationwide shelter transfer system may be all that is needed to fix the problem.
