We bought one of the wireless net cams for puppy watching which gave us greater flexibility to move it around as needed rather than having a cam connected to the computer.

I bought a Panasonic BL-C131 Wireless IP Cam which allows pan, tilt and 10x digital zoom and if you have enough time to waste it can even be used with a motion or heat detection and record!
When the pups were due I took the laptop and put on beside the bed with the volume on and I could see exactly what was happening with the dog. Even more useful I had a friend with loads of dog whelping experience watching over the web and she was ringing and giving advice!

I have a webcam but haven't used it in a long time.
