Hon, I think you need to decide what youd like to do as you might get into a training conflict between schutzhund and SAR.  I also think you might of maybe answered your own question about SAR

It's one of those things thar you really don't want to be called upon to do. But it sure would be a nice feeling if you were called and could help.

Maybe schutzhund is for you with the FH to aim at and you could go to an FH trial and watch to see if it intersts you.  And there is AKC tracking with the TD TDX and VST and they dont care if the dog is fast or slow.

Take time to do some thinking you are the only one who can decide what is best for you and your dog.

If you're not sure which way you want to go, why not get in contact with a local SAR group and go out to have your dog evaluated and see what they think of his temperment and attitude for the work?

If they feel he has the right qualities and would really be an asset then you have a goal.

If not then there are tracking titles in Sch ( FH, FH2, off leash tracking) and AKC that you could set as your goals instead.
