Having never seen or heard first hand of a dog with a retained testicle having problems, I asked my old vet what his first hand experience was and he told me that while most of the dogs he knew of didn't appear to have problems, one he operated on had become cancerous and he wished he'd operated sooner. He also showed me a horrendous pic from one of his reference books of a huge cancerous testicle that had been removed from a police dog. It may or may not be common, I simply would not take the chance, though I would leave the normal testicle in place if only one was retained.
