I agree sue, this is what the database is meant to be used for. I am taking everybit of info and using it. It really is nice to see so many recent threads that relate to training.

And please, rest assured I am NOT clogging my dogs arteries with the "bait" I am using. I am putting down only tiny pieces, and his reward is his tug toy at the end. My dog is not driven by food, it's all fun and games for him.

The only reason I walked my track 3 times is I have 8 inches of snow on the ground. I will ease off that. I am just trying to get him off and running with a good idea of what I expect him to do, and that is to use his nose and keep it on the ground.

I DO APPRECIATE EVERYONES INPUT. I really need all the help I can get!!!  Thank you ALL!!!

I agree with poster's on here. I honestly don't think it's cheating when using smelly bait if you are just starting out. Once your dog has the idea then go down to not so smelly bait for the track. Once he is going along and you feel that your dog can go without bait all the time, skip like 3-4 steps and then bait on 2 steps and repeat. Then gradually increase the steps without bait until you are confident your dog can do it with no bait. I also don't like the idea of walking on your track so many times and then bring your dog out to track. If your bait has a lot of smell in it he should be able to find it in the snow to track, and you should have the confidence to be able to follow your dog if you lose the track. Which I personally have done a number of time's myself.

WOW!  SOOO cool.   Are you going to get Duke into SCH training or just working on tracking?   I want to get into SCH Zach I think he's got a lot of drive too!  It's great reading all these useful tips.  I feel like a sponge absorbing any and all info I can!  I went to a SCH trial in October and I was hooked!  One of the people I work with has a SCH3 and has offered to work with me a bit.  I'm thrilled!
