Thank you for the replies and giving me some food for thought (no pun intended).

Muttlover25 - wow!  That's great that you're only paying $30 per bag.  I wish!  I'm paying about $51-$53 per bag for the EVO.  When I buy the 11th bag - I get the 12th one free.  Ha ha.  A little incentive to buy the food at the same placed anyway for a savings of $53.  I go through 2 bags of EVO a month.

I saw a price of $72.99 for a bag of the Orijen.  Certainly that can't be correct (I hope).  I'm heading to the store today to look and compare all 3 bags.  Also taking into account the kcal info.

GSDguy08 - I had a small trial pack of the TOTW (salmon).  It doesn't have a lovely smell to it.  Not as bad as the Wellness Fish did several years ago when I fed that.  Phewwww.  My female isn't really a picky eater and has been fine with me mixing the TOTW in with her EVO.  Knock on wood.

Steve1 - you shouldn't hold back if you have an opinion.  I certainly wouldn't be offended.  If you want to PM me - feel free.  I wouldn't want you to break your New Year's resolution though

I use to supplement with Wild Alaskan Salmon oil but really didn't notice a difference.  She does take 3 EPA Gel caps (recommended by her dermatologist) and again it's really not doing a lot except wasting my $$$ I fear.

Oh well.  Happy New Year everyone!!!

You should definitly change foods if you have skin problems you are what you eat applies to dog's also. I feed Orijen and raw meat to my dog's.

Steve1

I would like to hear your theory on this problem.  I think it has a lot to do with what you are feeding your dog.

Yes, i am not onwe for not saying what i mean and telling it in my way. I am sure that many people feed with good intentions But even feeding Orijen which to me is the very best Dog kibble on the market i still gave the Dogs Salmon oil and a Vitamin E capsule with there morning ration

Plus a huge amount of kibbles have a lot of grains in them which is certainly not good for a healthy dog or its coat

It is the blood that feeds the body and if the blood is contaminated then you will get reactions one way or the other, possibly in the form of a skin complaint

Another thing which i think helps start skin problems is Dogs which live in the House 24/7

NOT all houses are Air conditioned, and even then i do not see this as a perfect answer to a G.S dog living inside it has a double coat and it must dry out More so in the winter where there is a lack of fresh air coming into the House because of the central heating being on, and that alone is not good for a dogs coat it is not natural, and this alone drys out a dogs coat

I realise not everyone has a garden so they have to do the best they can for there dogs

I am not going to get into an slanging match with anyone as it is the choice of all of us how we house our dogs, and even if we do start on to each other at the end of the day nothing will change so i do not want to start any ill feeling on what i have written above

Finally i did post this photo else where but will do so again

This is a photo of a Dog who lives outside 24/7 from 8 weeks old now coming 17 months old

photo taken last november

Can anyone honestly say that living outdoors all weathers has affected the condition of this Dog, i will not thing so

Anyway i hope it will not offend anyone what is wrote about above, just my thoughts on the subject

I feed Orijen adult and with the puppies I cut it with Now! puppy formula. I also like to add Wellness Core Ocean to spice things up on occasion. Dogs need to be outside as much as possible. It would not hurt the owners also to stay outside as much as possible. I have stayed healthy with no skin issues either.

You'll get absolutely no disagreement from me.  I don't see how anyone could be offended in the least with what you wrote.  Goran looks awesome!  You raise some very interesting questions and offer insight to things I've thought of before.

My dogs do live in the house and I'm cleaning constantly (literally).  I have a fully fenced in yard (almost 1 acre) but I can honestly say they are not outside as much as they probably should be.  Truth be told - I'm afraid to leave my female out there unattended for fear that she'll lick and chew a nasty hot spot.

She's usually very good out there unattended though when I give her a raw beef bone to chew on but if left to her own devices...I wouldn't be so sure.  I can definitely tell a difference once the heat comes on and the itching starts with my female.  Seasonally, she's at her worst from November - March.

Leaving outside works. Dog should be outside as much as he can.

I alway let two of my females outside by them self as much as I can since I don't have fenced in back yard, I know few people that do and usually they ahve over 1 acr, I let them spend as much time as they can overe there they always come home with ice attached to their feet back ears etc. but with a huge smile on their faces :) Leaving outside has it's pros.

Crazee4gsds

You are lucky indeed to have an acre plot

My garden is small, taken up by a 18m pigeon loft one side and a 8 m Dog run only 1.2m from the house back wall

Inbetween rose gardens and Lawn well it was in the summer of 2008

Why do you not build an outside run and then a living house for the Dog who has skin trouble, My Kennels are double skin made of timber

By doing this and getting her to live outside 24/7 or most of let her in the house for 30minutes a day

After a couple of weeks outside you will see a change in her coat and condition put a small squirt of Salmon oil on the morning feed and thats it a Vit E capasule does them good as well

i will post a Pic very much left to the elements are my Dogs, but there Kennel is dry and i never get problems health wise

Rain can blow into the Pen but that is normal, i will not close it in

Here is my Kennels, the white board you see at the bottom is put there to stop Pup Heidi getting through the Bars, Once her head gets too big to go through i take the white board away

On the far kennel you can just see Goran

I wish I had kennels like that. They'd cost a small fortune here. My cyclone fabric models are getting pretty tatty. Better keep playing those lottery tickets.
