Is this a co-owned dog? You said "I sold my interest in him" which is what makes me ask that question.  It sounds like you are in a mess and the only thing to do is go visit the trainer and find out if he still has the dog. You don't say if you were phoning the trainer every week or what you've tried in the year the dog has been gone. Situations like this seem to pop up with astonishing regularity and seldom work out well for anyone, especially the dog.

The moral of the story: Do NOT ship your dog to someone to train/sell/etc. It's too late for Nicole and I hope the situation works out. Going there to re-claim the dog is your only option.
